I bought a large Plano box just loaded with vintage lures at an estate sale a couple years. Several old Creek Chubs & Bombers that were in excellent shape. Last year I spooled an old Mitchell 300 with 30 lb power pro. No leaders, snaps or swivels. I wasn't taking any chances on losing one of those lures. I caught a few bass but off the point on the shoreline I got into a good bunch of whitebass. The Mitchell was mounted to my dad's old fiberglass Eagle Claw rod that was limp as could be. I had a great time with those old lures & outfit. Wouldn't want to use that wimp rod every day.

I just love fishing an old soft spiral fiberglass rod using braid! Still have the thrills of a very bent rod and bouncy. retrieve.

I have hanging on the garage wall my old fiberglass rod from the 50s along with the Langly Spinflo reel.....just put line on it....and need to repair a few guides but UT was always a winner for me in my younger days....just bought a new Shimano and lightweight rod....what a difference! But this thread makes me want to grab a few Me pls and Dardevils and find a lake to muddy

Caught my 1st trout on that rod and Blue gill.
Those were the days !!
And my 1st Bass still remember it was 8inches long !! I was hooked after that for Bass.
Everyone have a great weekend and a safe 4th of July.

Johnson reel I believe they were green ?

Somewhere I have an old Johnson Princess, same reel but it was made in pink. It is unused in the box. I called Johnson to ask how many were made and the rep I talked to said that reel was NEVER made. Was always curious as to what the thing might be worth if I could still find it !

Look it up on your phone 2weeks ago at a garage sale I bought a Penn #9 Peer Less and rod for $20.00 reel excellent condition . It is worth way more than I paid it one person wanted $110.00 for it.
Have a great 4h of July and a safe one 😀

Love using vintage lures. Wouldn’t even try the JC Higgins round baitcaster with a steel rod. That would be like taking the fuel injection off the boat and putting a carburetor on. Not sure I need that experience.

I still have two Mitchell 300s that I use for Cat fishing and trolling for walleye. They are still mounted on Mitchell rods.

I tried using my grandfather's steel rod & his Pflueger Supreme level wind spooled with tan catgut line. I could not cast a lure under 3/4 ounce 30 feet. Using lt as he did with a heavy banksinker & hook I could heave it out twice that far, easily. My best use was fishing straight down from the side of the boat. Using a fluro leader with two 1/4 Oz splitshot & a minnow was fairly easy fishing. There was no sensitivity, I knew I had a fish when I could feel him running off. It was a fun tim,e, a one time fun time. Give me braid & carbon fiber.
