Must be in our DNA. Hunter/gathering effect. (Although I release most of my fish). Like others have stated, I enjoy the relaxation and getting back to nature.

Well said GLA.

This is just one of those things that if I have to explain, you won't understand. It's kind of like being the ride on a Harley vs. being on a ride in a car.

Good reply Jim, when I’m hooked up there is nothing else on my mind, it’s like time stands still and doesn’t exist with only one intent of landing that fish.

We are all different thank goodness. I’ve always enjoyed fishing. But in early midlife I focused on it. I had just killed, dressed and hung up a deer. Something clicked. I had always butchered my own deer and suddenly I could smell and taste blood just thinking about it. And I was no longer interested in killing. That was the last one. With fishing you can catch and release if you choose. I eat plenty of fish but it’s a choice. Still hard to explain but I love fishing. I will shoot the occasional nuisance pest but I don’t hunt anymore.

I too am a Lifetime fisherman . For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by the pursuit of the next bite. I retired at 55 and have been fishing hard for the past ten years. It’s hard but someone has to do it. I fish 3-4 days a week. I have a wonderful woman who enjoys the pursuit as much as I. She is right by my side from to sunrise to sunset. We enjoy being on the water, being in Gods creation , being together , each day bringing something new and wonderful. Hoping to catch a new POB. Actually, I’m glad that everyone doesn’t like fishing . We are the happy few.

As a life-longer fisherman this question is always on my mind.

A lot of anglers like to say ''it's an escape from modern life, it's peaceful and relaxing'' which is true, but let's be real, most anglers start out as kids, and this sort of stuff isn't on our minds when we are 10 years old.

For as long as I can remember, I've been fascinated with fishing, I can't walk by water without taking a few minutes to scout out some fish in the margins.

The majority of people just don't see the appeal, we've all taken a friend fishing who just didn't enjoy it...

Why do you think some people are so drawn to fishing?

Been fishing for 65 years, but when my heart stops skipping a beat when a fish hits a lure, I'll quit. Besides that nothing beats fresh fish right out of the water!

I don't know the answer, but I expect it is the same reason some could live in a mall rather than ever go outside, or some who enjoy the gift shop rather than the beauty of a national park. Then there are some who get more excited by seeing a new car go by than seeing a deer standing roadside. Why do some people prefer to enjoy some of the best fishing lakes in the country by buzzing around at dangerous speeds on a jet ski. More and more these days, folk even enjoy a good video fishing game over a day fishing. What can I say?

I have always thought that Water Skiing, and now Jet Boats are a Communist Plot to mess up a good fishing trip!

I never saw a runner smiling like a kid with his or her first catch. So, I don't run. The things involved in just getting ready to go fishing, getting to the place, being there and the memories created while fishing make it all worth while. I believe it is , for fishermen and women, the right combination of fun, relaxation and self therapy. It dosen't even matter if you don't catch anything. (I do that a lot)

My interest goes back to childhood - fishing was one time where an adult paid undistracted time with me I Do think the DNA (hunt/gather) theory makes perfect sense. I still wait excitedly to spending that undistracted time with an adult- my husband of 50+ years. Fish🐟🐠

Your post is closest to my own life experience. Yes we are all snowflakes, different, and we all are not blessed with all of the spiritual gifts, except for those who need them all. One of those gifts is patience. I'm an optimistic person blessed with a cheerful disposition. I feel that fishing is similar to gambling, which as you know can be addictive. Fishing to me is like getting something for nothing, which you know is not true, as an investment is necessary. It's probably cheaper to buy a can of sardines than go fishing. I always have to pray when I fish, because I don't have a fish finder and Jesus knows where the fish are. So for me it is a spiritual experience as well. We can pray for the Spiritual gifts that we need, and don't have.
