I and a neighbor used to go down to the Miss. River and catch crappies using minnows & worms with a fly rod. We called it "slurping". I was thinking about using a fly to catch the little buggers, spray a little gulp on the fly and have a ball. Would people think you were crazy? I'm I crazy? Your thought, please!

I saw a couple guys bass fishing with their fly rods yesterday. The only problem they had was casting to a spot 20 or 15 feet away. Their retrieve technique didn't look all that great either.

But hey, give it a go and post the pics. From the sounds of it, it is a doable way to fish other species.

Friend introduced me to this. We use clouser minnows with a little chartreuse dressing....lead eyes = about 1 ft per second sink rate...

I’ve used a fly rod for bluegill and crappie as well as bass. Had a freakin’ blast doing it too. Thanks for reminding me. I highly recommended it. Fly rods make the best crappie rods. Small jigs on the bottom with a small streamer tied on a dropper above is killer presentation for all panfish. Tiny cork poppers with feather or hair tail fished under overhanging tree branches will produce hours of bluegill catching fun. I would still be doing it from time to time except for one of my kids took my fly rod.
