What dory man said , I make my own 4oz sinkers save scrap lead from old chlmneys look around were you live if the chimneys are gray at the bottom its lead . You can find at a lumber yard pay by the pound . When you melt it down all impurities will float to the top skim them of with a steel spoon then your good to go.

I agree with the Grizz, forget wheel weights. I had a connection with a guy from a phone company. Back in the day they would bury cables in lead pipe. Very good lead for pouring. Lead also used in old plumbing is good. I would start with scrap yards. Look in their lead piles for sheets of lead or what looks like lead pipes. Good luck.

Actually there is nothing wrong with wheel weights. The stick on type is pure lead. You will have to do a lot of sorting with wheel weights getting the steel one out along with a lot of them are zinc now. A pair of side cutters will easily tell you the zinc from the lead.

As others have already stated roof flashing is good. So are the old lead pipes & traps. Don't play with the lead that sealed the cast iron pipe joints together. Up until the early 90's they used asbestos (oakum). Scrap yards are another good place to find lead.

Range lead is the easiest to come by and flat out works.

Lead shotgun shot is running around $2 a #. You can find lead cheaper on e-bay or by putting an ad on craigslist.

Old tow motor weights and tractor weights were also lead. Keep in mind that it's easier to smelt small pieces of lead compared to 50# weights.

That's why I suggested lead shot. It melts easy, and even at $20 for 10lbs, thats 320 1/2 oz jigs.

I have bought lead ingots from ebay in the past and poured some downrigger weights.
Be careful, there was a local guy around here who pours sinkers for years and supplied most of the sporting good stores.
He died from cancer caused from breathing that crap for years! Use good ventilation! Not worth it in my book! Have already had two bouts with cancer myself.

Plenty of people on ebay sell pure lead ingots.
Most sinker molds require soft lead.

All you had to do Was melt it and scrape the paper and impurity’s off, pour it into a lead mold and sell it to shooters for big bucks. It was likely pure lad which is at a premium.

And to looking for lead to cast jig heads, pure lead is not needed. In fact it’s a waste of money since pure lead is so valuable to shooters that use it, muzzle loaders, or bullet casters who Mx their own alloys.

It's a state by state thing UF, ie banned in Massachusetts, ok in Connecticut. Some only ban sinkers, while others ban all lead in lures. So no Jigs, Spinnerbaits, Buzzbaits, etc. Until the lure companies start making EVERYTHING weighted with Tungsten, some people will get a rude (and expensive) awakening.
As far as hunting goes, I know it's banned for waterfowl, but I'm not aware of any other.
