I and a neighbor used to go down to the Miss. River and catch crappies using minnows & worms with a fly rod. We called it "slurping". I was thinking about using a fly to catch the little buggers, spray a little gulp on the fly and have a ball. Would people think you were crazy? I'm I crazy? Your thought, please!

Crazy? No. Small streamer of bucktail should work like a charm, with or without a scent.

Fly, if you can find them in shallow water during the spawn, no reason you couldn’t catch them on a fly rod with a crappie scrub, stinger Shad or other small, minnow imitator. Have a blast! Share those pics!

Used to catch alot of bluegill and sunfish on a tiny green popper/ my flyrod. ¿Do you REALLY care if other people think you're crazy? (It might be a BONUS, to have them THINK that!)

Go for it. I don’t think the fish care what kind of rod you’re using. 😀

I have caught tons of crappies on a white dry fly during the mayfly hatch. So no reason they wouldn't bite a fly other times, just need to find them feeding near the surface.

Yep, they’ll stay away from you and you’ll have the whole place to your self.

I often use a fly dropper below or above a minnow on a slip float when crappie fishing. Most of the time the minnow wins but I’ve got quite a few on the drop.

I’ve had a blast catching crappie and bluegill on a fly rod... I’d use tiny poppers and little foam beetles. Good fun!

Been fly fishing quite a few times for anything freshwater from the shore, dock or kayak/John boat. For bluegills and crappies, I enjoy using dry flies and watching them rise to the surface and ‘slurp’ (using the flyguy’s term) them right up. Lot of fun entertainment.

As a kid in Ohio I used my Zebco as a fly rod. I'd hook a grasshopper strip line out whip that hopper out as far as it would go and bingo another crappie or sunfish would go on my stringer. Then I figured out I could cast even farther using a bobber. Didn't know I wasn't fly fishing just free lining. So now I've got fly rods and floating line and foam grasshoppers, beatles and assorted insects that can even fool me. Still thrills me!

flyguy....Crappies on a fly rod are a blast, and the larger ones fight as though they think they are
big Bass. So what if people think you're crazy -- let'em think it, we know better. Tight lines!

Yeah you right, MtFlyTyer74!! Yeah, it DOES kinda feel like they think they are a big Bass! (I've almost FORGOTTEN what it's like, when fishing more for the experience of the "thrill of the hunt/ catch", than 2B fishing for food &/or profit!!!)

A 4 wt. fly rod with Trout Magnets work well. Jig or cast and allow to slow sink.
