I have enjoyed large fish on lite tackle , but it does in crease death rate. I had a hard time reviving a 37 lb Striper I caught on 12lb test.
Lots of fun. However, it does hurt the fish a lot .
If they are going to get released, get them in and released as fast as possible
That’s the bottom line, release as soon as possible, don’t handle them much and slosh them back and forth to get water thru heir gills
I bring them in as fast as possible. All my freshwater fishing is catch and release, the less you fight them and the quicker you release increases the odds for survival.
I play the fish for about the first 4 seconds on the hook set just to get a feel of how big it might be but after that it is all in and no play depending on the fish as some make big long runs.
I'm with you WhiskerKnight , I'd rather fight him in the water instead of in the boat. It's more about the fun of the fight than fish count for me.
Saltwater trout have paper thin mouth and if your try to horse them in you just wind up ripping it out of his mouth.
Get them into the boat as fast as possible so they're not over stressed
