Is there any kind of bait that works for basic pond fishing (Florida) that I can keep in the fridge or something long term?

I like to go out with my son and toss a line in the little pond across the street. Our problem is we never have bait. I can get a cup of worms from the local sport shop and those work great but they only last a limited time before everything is dead and dried out. So when we want to go walk over there we can't because we have no bait and fishing gets delayed until I can drive to the store again.

Is there anything I can keep around longer term so we can just go out on a random Sunday morning and not worry about having to drive to get bait again? We don't do anything fancy, there are small sunnies over there and he's a kid who likes to throw a line in for an hour and that's it.

What could I use?

Mealworms keeps good in the fridge so does red worms or night crawlers the trick is keep them out of the sun while you are using them don’t let them get to warm. It’s best to have a small cooler you can keep them in while you are fishing and what you have left And when you are done fishing put them in the fridge they will keep a long time.

Buy some worm bedding. Follow the directions and store your container in a cool spot.

Not sure if all Walmarts have them, but ours has worms that don't need refrigeration, even come in garlic and a weird lime green color. Some kind of redworm, I was told.
If they're sunfish-type, don't see why one of the Berkeley nibbles shouldn't work. Good luck !

I like bacon or hot dogs. Bread to make dough balls works too.

Yes you can get bedding for worms put in a small cooler that holds like 24 cans just remember they need air and moist soil. use the Rind from melons to feed them and egg shells or Real Fine cornmeal. All kinds of videos on YouTube good luck

You can keep nightcrawlers in the fridge for weeks or longer.

Buy some beef liver, that is "Reduced for Quick Sale"... Slice it into "bait-sized pieces"... Use a few Ziploc sandwich bags, to keep what you'll use in a day, in each one. He shows up y wants to fish; nuke one for a few minutes to thaw it out.

I buy nightcrawlers from Walmart and they last over a month in the fridge, alive and kicking. I keep my Shad in the freezer cut and ready in a large mason jar and carry in my cooler when i fish.

Used to raise crawlers in a worm box, ready to go when I needed them. Until the day my young sons decided to dig them all out to play with on their sandbox in the backyard. Man, those two were always up to something.

one can try to keep crawlers in the family fridge, and all will be good....unless the top is loose from prying snack hungers and then when the wife finds them in the vegetable drawer, you might be sleeping in the garage for a fortnight.
