Internal bleeding? What should we do when a hook is inside the fish?

I noticed this with a recent fish I got - my hook got stuck deep inside its mouth - you can still see the leader but only the top of the hook is within eye-sight. One of the anglers managed to get the hook out. But I noticed the fish "went bloody" afterwards - something I didn't quite understand what just happened.

Afterwards, the fish either got really weak or died.

What actually happened? I think the hook did some internal damage to the fish leading to lost of blood?

What do you normally do in such situations?

Cut the line and release the fish
It may survive. Or it might not.
Bad hooked fish are good candidates for the fillet knife, if in doubt.
Sometimes they will make it
On more than one occasion, I’ve caught fish with a piece of monofilament comming out their rectum. Closer examination showed a rusted but intact hook stuck there.
That means the hook worked loose from the gullet and traveled thru the digestive system. Eventually the hook would have dissolved.

Years ago my brother had a fish break his line. Couple of weeks later I caught a 4lb large mouth that had a hook shank hanging out of his anus. Hook section had completely rusted off. Long story short I pull very gently and a jig head came out. A very special type of jig head that my brother was using. Had pasted thru the fishes body and most of hook had rusted away. If hooked in gullet cut line as close as you can and let them go. They have a lot better chance than if you try to remove it.

6 one way, 1/2 dozen the other. Personally, I don't get my gear wet, if I'm NOT intending to KILL and eat (&/or sell) {&/or donate} some fish.
It sounds like, if the fish is undersized to legally keep; maybe cutting the line as close to the hook as possible, would be the "humane way" to go.
I strongly suggest that you ✓/ a LEO about all that, as well.

I use a stick bobber to remove a swallowed hook what you do is put the pointed end in the fishes mouth hold the leader against bobber and twirl the fish around he fish will usually fall off and is ok work good on bluegill.
