A classic that ends right about this time of year. One of the best ever. Too easy? Probably. Who are these two, what's the movie and who directed it?

I recognized Jack Lemmon and Shirley McClain right away, but, couldn't think of her name for a good while... I think I saw "The Apartment" 1 time, maybe in the late 1970's or early 1980's, while hangin' around the Dirty City, in-between boats. (Watching the "Prize Movie"/ my Grandma, on a weekday afternoon.)
Just where is "the Dirty City"?
Lookit that necktie! The knot isn't much bigger than my thumbnail! How did they do that?
Then in the 1970's, guys tied their neckties with a knot nearly half the size of your fist!

Cleveland, Ohio... Some truck driver or another, came up with that; back in the 1970's, is my understanding of the origin of the name.
Had a shipmate from there back in the 70's. He pronounced it
ca-leave-a-land. A real garden spot, he claimed. I remember when the lake caught fire. Or was that Toledo?

Cayahuoga River I believe.

Sorry, Spirit... Been "otherwise occupied" over here... Yes, it was the Cuyahoga River itself, that caught on fire... In fact, it's caught on fire, several times, throughout the history of Cleveland; I think that the "most famous time" was either '68, '69, or '70... Right around the time of the very first "Earth Day". I lived about 35 miles outside of town, when that happened.
They've cleaned it up ALOT, since then, but... I haven't eaten a fish out of it, or from anywhere right near the mouth of the river EVER, that I'm mindful of. We used to eat fish caught a mile west (upstream, as the flow of the Great Lakes goes) and I can remember eating fish caught 30 + 40 miles to the east.

Really? There was such a thing? Lol In my dreams I'm that young! First R rated movie I ever saw was black and white. Can't remember the name but it was about a small town in Texas. Cybal Shepherd was naked in it and I think it won picture of the year.

It did not. That honor went to The French Connection. But -
The Last Picture Show. Ben Johnson won an academy award for best supporting actor. As did Cloris Leachman for supporting actress. Jeff Bridges and Tim Bottoms. Johnson did not want to do it because the role required him to speak too much. Bogdanovitch (the director) persuaded him by telling him he would win an academy award if he did.
Did you know that the movie is based on a novel by the same guy who wrote Lonesome Dove? Larry McMurtry. He also wrote Terms of Endearment - which starred -----------
BTW, the recipient of that woeful look is Jack Nicholson, who I believe had just told her she needed to go drink a bottle of bourbon to kill that bug that had crawled up her ass.
Good Movie!

I didn't even know it was based on a book. Lol. I'll take a guess at Terms, was it Bette Middler? Meryl Streep?
