WD-40 was not made to be a fish attractant it was first made for NASA to dissolve rust not for fish.

I was in Alaska during the Valdez event. What a mess. Innumerable animals died and thousands were injured by that spill. I was working for an oil company and it was definitely a low point in that experience. The oil companies spent millions on attempting to ensure that would never happen again and millions more trying to clean up along with being fined and appropriately so.
I gained a huge respect for our oceans from this experience.
Please do all you can to prevent polluting our oceans and fresh waters.

I have heard of charter boat captains using WD40 as a fish attractant. They spray it on their trolling lures. Try it yourself and see if it works for you. WD40 definitely does not repel fish. Can't lose huh?

Understand that a component of WD 40 is manhaden oil. If true that’s explanation for effectiveness.

Amazing how many chime in with a comment, while obviously skipping a few posts that totally refute their comments... just friggin' amazing.
It's like y'all just ignored the fact that THERE IS NO FISH OIL IN WD-40, per the inventor, per the company, per the MSDS Spec sheet !!!.....GOT IT ??????.. jeeeez.

Just quit perpetrating urban legends, old wives tales, conspiracy theories.....all of it. It doesn't make you seem informed WITH ACTUAL FACTS, at all..... it's just a sad look.

Sorry for the rant, but it truly is a present failing in our nation.

Some old wives tales have a lot of truth in them, never discount something just cause you don't know anything about it. You are right, WD-40 does not have fish oil in it, the rumor has been there about the fish oil for over 50 years that I know.

My brother used it all the time for bass when weren't hitting on usual scent sprays/paste. Swore it worked.

Regular or not, note that my comment was not definitive and in any case it does not warrant an explosive response, its just fishing. Having said that, how do you explain the observation from so many quarters as to the benefit of applying WD. I must add that I have never used the stuff for that purpose.

I only had a Colorado DOW officer point out a can in my boat and tell me it is illegal to use WD-40 in the gold medal waters near Spinney and Elevan Mile reservoirs. It feels like cheating now that I’ve heard about it from an officer. So I’ve never tried it.
