Well if you bring your own gear, take a line counter reel, easy. If you are using their gear the old school way was to PULL out a foot or so of line each pull. Then you just pull out however many feet/pulls you need to get to the proper depth. It takes you right about 1 min to pull out 100 pulls/feet of line that way.

Thats how I do it

A good way to mark your line is to use one of the above methods for the initial drop. Before reeling up cross your line across the face of the spool. Upon your next drop watch for the line cross.

Anyone remember fathoms?

I do, but why fight the system. Most depth sounders/fish finders are even in feet and meters now.

You're probably right bapabear, I may have lost.300 or.400 of an inch.

Offshore navigation charts are still in fathoms, and most deep water sonars will readout in fathoms if you want

Yeah bapabear, some do. Out here people still refer to areas like "they've moved in to the 30 fathom line, or start looking for signs when you cross the 60 fathom line."
But sad to say,our numbers are dwindling.
He!!, I've got trainees in the shop, that when I tell them to make an adjustment on a machine, .010" counter clockwise. They cock their head to one side like a puppy dog 'cause they don't know clockwise from counter clockwise.
The future is dim,at best.......

Consider yourself lucky. I have lost almost an inch and a half or 6.8 to the neg. 6 power marine leagues of height.

If it's over 17 fathoms or 100ft in Puget sound, it is no longer legal to fish. Protecting the Yellow Eye Rockfish. Interesting to note that the law is written in feet rather than fathoms by the "marine biologist"

We go offshore to the Canyons for Tuna and Billfish. The top edge of the Canyons are around 100 fathoms, and then drop off pretty quickly to 1000 and more.
Google Earth the Northeast coast, and zoom in a little, it's awesome!

Yes, I have done that off Monterey California, Hawaii and Mexico. Most of the fish I have caught have been in the top four phantoms of water. Most fish except tuna have been on the surface. It is interesting as a side note that most deep water trolling I have done is at 9 to 12 knots rather than 1 to 2 knots. When delivering sail boats to Cabo from the U.S. I could not get enough speed for good bill fishing. Sharks not counting, I settled for tuna, Bonita and wahoo at 6 to 7 knots. Life was rough in those days Surprisingly enough, I still have not caught a Dorado.

Chunking Tuna averaged 10-20 fathoms. Trolling Tuna or Marlin on the surface down to maybe 2 fathoms tops. The only Mahi I've caught were chickens, caught on spinning rods under buoys or floatsom or patches of sargasso weed. Only went Sharking once and fished 1-5 fathoms, drifting with a 3/4mile chumslick.

I am a old mountain boy 150 miles from the ocean, how long is a fathom in feet.
