I fish mainly open ocean. What are the ways to gauge how deep you are fishing? Example, when a boat captain says the fish are 100ft down how do you know when your bait/jig gets to 100ft? Is it in line set up? What are the tricks of the trade as it were?

How many seconds take to get to bottom? How deep is bottom? then count to stop at 100'.

Line counter on reel. Most Captains will let you bring your own rod / reel...but dont want you tangling up with everyone.

Well if you bring your own gear, take a line counter reel, easy. If you are using their gear the old school way was to PULL out a foot or so of line each pull. Then you just pull out however many feet/pulls you need to get to the proper depth. It takes you right about 1 min to pull out 100 pulls/feet of line that way.

HUH? not enough line? Ask captain how many seconds. Or you can tie a little piece of dacron or a rubber band etc.. on line near reel at the depth you hook fish... or a bobber stopper can be on mainline and you set it as indicator.

We call them pulls. The distance between the reel and the first eye. On our offshore rods it’s about 2 feet. If you mark the fish at 100 feet, it’s 50 pulls.

πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘ Some may think it’s primitive but it works.

You can do the same method to figure out your set back when long line trolling. 🐟on

Yes sir. We use it trolling around the floaters and down the rips offshore.

If you can determine how many feet of line come off one pass of the level wind and then count passes to get to desired depth is how I set long lines for trolling.

I have something similar to this that works too
