I think it’s a shiner Mike, and yes we have them here in small and large sizes. When I don’t want to buy any I toss my minnow trap in an area they are swimming in, but I’ve yet to see a squirrel 🐿 eat a minnow.

Emerald or Milwaukee shiner. Great bait for walleye fishing but getting very hard to find anymore.

Some say this is a shiner and perhaps it is. However, could it be spearing?

We see them in most of the NJ bait shops.

Looks like a minnow or golden shiner. It's SQUIRREL season. Bang, Bang.

Don't know one minnow from another by specie. But I love eating squirrel and rabbit (or a plate of fried frog legs)! Three of natures best wild game table fares. Ummm, ummm!

The jumble is SQUIRREL ! The fish looks like 'smelt', a small fish species that run in large schools
in cold northern waters (fresh and salt) that are distantly related to salmon and trout; one of several favorite New England baits used for ice fishing ! Usually caught with dip nets !

Not a smelt. Used to catch smelt by the thousands on Lake Michigan in the spring. Good eating and great northern bait. Fish shown is an emerald shiner.

Thanks for the correction; wasn't sure of my quess, as I haven't
seen a smelt since last ice fishing
trip with my grand-father, almost 60 years ago ! They do look somewhat similar (to me), but memory is no longer as sharp
as it used to be !
