Question about line.
I have 10 lb braid w 8 lb fluoro leader. I keep getting bitten off by pike and snagged. Can I use 10lb braid with heavier fluoro leader? What do you recommend I do? I have a size 30 reel

30lb mono works well for not getting bit off by Pike.

I would probably bulk up the weight of the line and it should help, pike can still bite through it but less likely. There is also steal leaders, far as I know pike can’t bite through those but I don’t hear about people using them or seeing them being sold. This is just what I know I target bass mostly so there probably more qualified folks on here.

Thing is I’m targeting bass and it’s a pain having to put another leader on braid after getting bit off. Let’s say I put 30 lb mono on 10 lb braid. Does that work?

Yes it does work, but if you caught on a snag you are more than likely to break your braid than leader. But yeah that’ll work

I run 20 pound braid with 15-20 pound flouro leader for bass in musky/pike/pickerel waters. Never lost anything

You can keep your current setup and add a metallic trace (you can tie your own or buy ready-made ones) at the end. The trace comes into contact with the teeth, the fluoro blends with the water, and your braid does the heavy lifting away from abrasion.

I've used plastic coated steel leaders when targeting "toothy fish", for 50 years. That's whether using a braided mainline or a mono mainline. Might've only lost a 1/2 dozen or fewer, to snags.

Use a 12” plastic coated steel leader and you will be good. Don’t know about using 30# mono leader - if it works for others - try it. We use 3’ 80# mono leader with 80# braid when after muskies.

If you’re serious about catching larger northern pike or musky you need 20 lb braid or mono and a steel leader. The wire or steel leader does not deter the pike from striking. They are a reaction strike fish. I don’t care if you use 100 lb braid or mono, if they are hooked deep, behind their back teeth, they will cut the line. Try it yourself. Next time you catch a northern pike, loop your line around their back teeth and pull on it. Those teeth are like razors.
Fishing far north Canadian waters for giant pike for one or two weeks
every year fort past twelve years, I've caught thousands of pike and can
assure you 60 and (preferably 80) pound fluorocarbon leaders will do the
job. Also, it's much easier on the hands and fingers than metal leaders.

Ok... I had a 10-12 lb northern cut 60 lb flouro. I will stick to a wire leader.

Jay the pike up here in the northeast are pretty aggressive and I don’t believe they care what kind of leader you use…That being said I’ve been using thin steel or rubber coated steel leaders for as long as I can remember.

That hasn't been my experience, but I don't blame you a bit. I actually
usually use 80 lb fluorocarbon, but friends like the 60 lb. One thing for sure,
you can't go wrong with a wire leader.
Hey Gary the wire is always attached to a reaction bait...spinner, buzzbait, inline buck tail but also on a large rapalas too.
