Biggest salmon I ever saw was a 70 pounder which made teh newspaper in either Portland or Seattle I forget which. Huge fish. Largest I ever caught commercially was a 33 pound and that was quite a tussle hand lining a leader. Can't even imagine working in a 70 pound fish.

The only good knife is a very sharp knife. I have Rapala, and it does well, but when the fish is plenty, and big, the electric is the only way to go. Learn how to use it, lots of good video's how to!

I fished the Kenai, quite a few times, but from the bank you have to bring your own rock to stand on. It is shoulder to shoulder when the fish are biting. I then found out about 'dipnetting'. It is legal for one day, in one river and the limit was 5 per person. So a family of five could take home 25 fish all about 10 to 25lbs. A lot of times you had 2 in the net at the same time, and you had to drag to shore. The hard part was walking up the hill with the ice chest. Most had wagons like us, but still hard to do.

Bubbas are really nice and they offer a couple at reasonable prices, but again, you got to watch it constantly or it won't be there when you need it. You know, as I've gotten older I've become more sedentary in my fishing habits, and my 70+ year old bladder is not quite as elastic as it used to be. Either that or its shrunk. Whatever the reason, if I'm gonna be sittin on the bank in my folding chair enjoying a brewski or two I'm gonna have to get up and answer mature's call. I do this quite often, oftener than I would like. But fishermen and women I've found for the most part are honorable people and I've never worried about coming back to my chair to find a rod or a reel or a bag or bait missing. Except for filet knives. Is there an unspoken rule out there some where that says filet knives are fair game? Please tell me if there is and next time out I'll see if I can't pick myself a new one. New for me.

I used to teach pocket knife safety to cub scouts and had my car broken int only thing missing was my box of 8 pocket knifes

I'm just learning to filet and would like to purchase a really good filet knife. I
bought a cheap one and it leaves way too much meat on the outsides of the bone. Any
suggestions?

Best advice I can give on a filet knife is make sure its super sharp and get plenty of practice. The sharper it is the easier the work. Just be careful about your fingertips.

Oh, well.
Susan got all of us to yakking about knives.
I had a (rare) free weekend in Florida when I was on a business trip once, and wound up going to an outdoor expo. There was a fella there sharpening knives for $2 a blade, so I handed him my folding hunting knife and $2. A few minutes later, he handed the knife back and I ran the edge along the hair on my arm, dry. Smoothest cleanest shave ever! It could have lost half its sharpness and still do a fair job of shaving. I was solidly impressed! Unfortunately, it was a cheap knife and didn't keep the sharp edge for long. Wish I'd been carrying my good knife.
