2 wks back I pulled some stupid moves but got lucky both times. Put a chatter bait in a tree and when I went tried to yank it out my bait caster slipped out of my hands. Went to the bank and got the lure out of the tree and followed the line to the spot it went in the water. Lucky that the handle was in gear so I was able to pull it up. 30 minutes later I tightened my reel to my rod and broke the threads. Tried to make a cast and the reel went in the water. The line was still in the eyes of the rod and some line got tangled so I gather it all together and pulled my reel up. May have used up all of my luck that day.

Years ago my brother stopped by to see me on his way to Vietnam, courtesy of the USMC. It was freezing cold but we had to squeeze in one last pike fishing trip. My prize outfit was a Pflueger Supreme baitcaster, and i insisted that he use it. after a couple of enjoyable but fishless hours, he made the famous "one last cast," and the rod & reel went sailing out of his hand into about 40 feet of water. So we had to get it back or for the next year he would be beating himself for letting go of the frozen rod handle.

out came the old unhook the clips on the stringer, only in this case it was three stringers attached to a four foot 2 X 4 weighted down with a sash weight. After rowing back and forth over the suspected landing spot, we made "one last pass," and sure enough our monster dardevle was hooked on one of the stringer clips. After pulling about fifty yards of line off the sunken reel (the one time we could not get a backlash), up came the rod and reel, along with our spirits.

He left for Vietnam the next morning, and thankfully returned a year later, when we relived and almost reenacted our memorable fishing trip. So dig out one of those old fashioned stringers, and don't give up!

I used the chain stringer approach once and it worked. Caught it in the bail of the spinning reel. But I knew where it was; off a dock in 10' of water.

Those Cush-It rod end cushions have saved a few rods for me.

I just lost a rod & reel yesterday at a lake. I had it propped in a link fence high up & went to check the other fishing rod and reel (not very far). That's what happens when you do something else. Even when the fish are not biting, just leave your fishin rod & reel and it could be gone. I wonder if that fish is still dragging it around?
