Mr. Samples

I'm guessing the two rods with the two eyes allow the angler to choose between
a light and more firm action to better match the lure and/or size of the fish.

Bought one like you did at a garage sale , took it to my cabin on the miss. River. Guy's were handing it around in the tavern and somebody bet me I couldn't catch a Walleye with it. Cleaned it up and relined it and used it for vertical jigging the next day, worked quite well and we took turns yanking Sauger and Walleye with it.
Casting not so much but vertical jigging -Perfect !

We used to keep them in our glovebox. If you wanna fish it does work. But only because itโ€™s all you have. It was called the pocket fisherman. Boy the 70s. Bringing back memories now ๐Ÿ‘

Yes!!! It is the Ron Popiel's Pocket Fisherman. Invented and sold on tv from the late 60's to early 70's. This guy is an inventor, he also created the set and forget rotisserie oven on infomercials.

The fishing rod and reel work just fine and are fun to use. I had one for years and never did know what happened to it. Fold it in half and start in the glove box or center console.

I always look for that set up at garage sales and swap meets. People do not get rid of them. The little rig brings back memories fishing from the bank or on a dock. Especially useful on streams with heavy brush and cover. EVERY TRY TO BARREL ROLL WITH A SPINNING REEL.

Consider yourself blessed to own one.

I used one for ice fishing pan fish. Seems like mid 70s. Spooled on 4 lb line. Worked better than any other rig available at the time. The closed construction kept the slush and other frozen crud from the mechanism. I'd use one again if I had one.

Go to E-bay I've seen them. I had one and it did the job so I thought about getting another. I saw them in the box and others beat to death and everything between. I may bite the bullet and get another.

Never used one. But the TV show Pawn Stars had a recent segment where the shop owner bought one. Unused early ones in the box are somewhat of a collectors item.

I have a funny story about this rod/reel. I fly my own airplane and often land at small airports that have farm ponds close by. I keep one of these in the plane. it doesn't take any room, its lite and has caught many bass in these ponds over the years.

I think that it was in the 1970's when Popiel advertised the heck out of their "Pocket Fisherman". We all thought that it was a joke of an idea, although the concept of having tackle under the car seat just in case you saw some water and had a few spare minutes might not be such a bad thing.

I saw this at a yard sale and bought it for $1, it was such a memory jog that I couldn't pass it up. I took it apart and cleaned and oiled it. Inside the case, it's a spincast mechanism as you'd expect. There's some clever engineering inside, and it's not the worst quality reel I've ever seen. Certainly, it's better quality than the Daiwa AC80 that I just threw out. (I'm not putting Daiwa down, they make some good reels - but the AC80 isn't one of them. I took it out on the front lawn to try it, if functions smoothly and well - although it isn't a rig you'd choose for casting accuracy. I think I'll hang it on the garage wall.

I'm curious though - has anyone here ever used one of these, and what was your experience with it?

Bought one of those Pocket Fisherman in the early 70's in Abilene & still have it today. Keep it in the trunk of my car & have used it numerous times when I was out on the road.. It came with a zippered plastic pouch with a carry strap all of which I still have along with the instruction pamplet. Can't remember what they were but have caught fish with it.

Two rods give the unit more flex on the small part to feel the bites
