I had mine dragged into the banana river in 1974 by a salt water catfish. I miss it. Very cool item.

Back in the early 80s when I was still young enough to do stupid stuff (Who am I kidding, I still do stupid stuff at 68.), I had a friend who got a bunch of these at an auction. He had a shots and fishing tournament amongst friends, where you could only use these. Whenever anyone got a bite, everyone else had to take a shot. I didn't catch any fish, but I sure was happy. Several people did catch fish and the winner of the tournament got a big bottle of Crown Royale. Not the rod I ever choose to fish with, but it'll do in a pinch. I have an Emmrod fishing rod with a spincaster reel that I keep under the seat of my "94 Ranger PU with a small box of tackle just in case. Like the Popiel it doesn't cast very far or accurately but will do when nothing else is available.

I'm guessing the two rods with the two eyes allow the angler to choose between
a light and more firm action to better match the lure and/or size of the fish.

The line went thru the heavy one then the light one you got action on the light and when it got harder the heaver rod took the load

That sounds like fun either way. Forcing everyone to use the Ronco Pocket Fisherman sounds like fun. Later in the contest it must of gotten pretty funny

I think that it was in the 1970's when Popiel advertised the heck out of their "Pocket Fisherman". We all thought that it was a joke of an idea, although the concept of having tackle under the car seat just in case you saw some water and had a few spare minutes might not be such a bad thing.

I saw this at a yard sale and bought it for $1, it was such a memory jog that I couldn't pass it up. I took it apart and cleaned and oiled it. Inside the case, it's a spincast mechanism as you'd expect. There's some clever engineering inside, and it's not the worst quality reel I've ever seen. Certainly, it's better quality than the Daiwa AC80 that I just threw out. (I'm not putting Daiwa down, they make some good reels - but the AC80 isn't one of them. I took it out on the front lawn to try it, if functions smoothly and well - although it isn't a rig you'd choose for casting accuracy. I think I'll hang it on the garage wall.

I'm curious though - has anyone here ever used one of these, and what was your experience with it?

Yes my children bought me one for Christmas in 1971 or 1972. I used it when I went "Ice Fishing". Al Martin and I drove into the Chicago area to a small lake called "Power Horn Lake", it is on the boarder of Illinois/Indiana. After about 20 minutes the holes were dug in the ice and we were setting up our "Ice fishing rods" . We had six rods each with different lures and baits so that we could switch them out after 15 to 20 minutes. I had three rods set up and was busy rigging the other three , when I turned around my Pocket Po-peel was gone, I ask Al if he had changed it out and he said no. What had happened was a Northern Pike had struck the jig that had a "Golden Roach" on it and had pulled the rod into the lake. Lesson learned don't take your eyes off of the rods while ice fishing. I tried to snag it with a "Salmon Snagging Hook" but no such luck... I never told the children and never saw any for sale again. Great concept and worked great in a pinch, I just had to be very vigil changing the fishing line to a "Premium Line".
