It is right up there with a line wrapped around a beer can. You catch a big fish, you will have a real fun time and might get tugged into the lake. just Sayin...RJS

I'm surprised about your line being stripped! When I took this thing apart, I was impressed by how much line it could hold. It could be that Popiel only put just enough line on them so that they could sell them? Also, the Pocket Fisherman had a fairly decent drag mechanism, I thouught.

When you’ve hung a ten or fifteen pound red, they’re hard to land with a regular fishing reel. The Popiel wasn’t a joke but it wasn’t for large game fish.

I would think that in lake fishing for say sand bass or crappie, it would work find. But a bull red would rip off all the line in short order. Just Sayin...RJS

You’re correct Robert, and it happened. I wish I had one now to Crappie fish with. It’d be a lot of fun.

The whole idea behind using light gear is having the line ripped off the reel. I caught a Perch once that almost spoiled my pocket pole. Good thing I respooled with 10 lb line. Woulda never got her thru the hole.!!!

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen one of those. I never used one but a buddy of mine and I were fishing the spillway below the dam for Tobin Lake in northern Saskatchewan back in 1976. The bite was on and he got broke off in the rocks. I guess he didn’t want to take the time to re-tie so he reached in his bag and pulled one out rigged with a red and white spoon. He caught 3 or 4 small pike in the 4-5 pound range and we were both laughing at his success when he hooked into something much larger. After about 10 seconds the fish bolted and his pocket fisherman exploded in his hand. We laughed even harder. He’s gone now, but you just jogged a great memory for me. Thanks

I think that it was in the 1970's when Popiel advertised the heck out of their "Pocket Fisherman". We all thought that it was a joke of an idea, although the concept of having tackle under the car seat just in case you saw some water and had a few spare minutes might not be such a bad thing.

I saw this at a yard sale and bought it for $1, it was such a memory jog that I couldn't pass it up. I took it apart and cleaned and oiled it. Inside the case, it's a spincast mechanism as you'd expect. There's some clever engineering inside, and it's not the worst quality reel I've ever seen. Certainly, it's better quality than the Daiwa AC80 that I just threw out. (I'm not putting Daiwa down, they make some good reels - but the AC80 isn't one of them. I took it out on the front lawn to try it, if functions smoothly and well - although it isn't a rig you'd choose for casting accuracy. I think I'll hang it on the garage wall.

I'm curious though - has anyone here ever used one of these, and what was your experience with it?
I think that it was in the 1970's when Popiel adve... (show quote)

Oh yeah! Back in the day in SoCal (Oxnard/Pt. Huememe) area and caught perch, smelt and mackeral off the piers there. It was my brother's rig and he loved it. Then, there was the big fish that pulled it over the railing and we lost it. We tried to snag/retrieve it with a diamond jig (lead weight with a treble hook on the end) but no luck. Good times!!!!

I used one for ice fishing pan fish. Seems like mid 70s. Spooled on 4 lb line. Worked better than any other rig available at the time. The closed construction kept the slush and other frozen crud from the mechanism. I'd use one again if I had one.

Had a couple of them when I was a kid, made pretty decent ice fishing jig rods.

I used one as a kid back in the late 60's and early 70's. My cousin and I would ride our bikes a couple of miles outside of our little town to a small fram pond that was over ran with bluegill. We caught fish all day with those and then rode back to town. Good times!
