If anyone cares-yesterday's 1 day sport fish counts in San Diego are approximately: 400 Blue Fin tuna (Toro) (up to 100 lbs. +), 800 Yellowfin tuna (Ahi) up to 50 lbs., 400 Dorado (Mahi Mahi), 175 Yelowtail (Hamachi), 125 Skipjack tuna, 85 Bonito and a pile of misc. bottom fish-sea bass etc...

This has been more or less steady every day for about 2 months. Should continue into Oct.

Unfortunately I have no idea what this means. Total (quota) catches per species?

I think that's reported catch for the day OJ. All the pelagic fish have to be reported to the feds so they can be subtracted from the years quota. When they reach quota the season will be shutdown.

I suspected as much from watching Wicked Tuna, the fishing soap opera on the Outdoor Channel. Thanks for clearing that up for me. If it preserves the fishery by not over-bagging I am for it.

Yeah it's intentions are good, but commercial and recreational battle every year. The populations are affected by entities outside this country, that cause our quotas to go down every year. That makes it harder every year to justify investing money in offshore gear. Many of the guys I know who used to fish offshore gave it up,due to less return. First you have to gear up, then you need good weather to make the trip, then the fish have to come within range of your boat, then the commercial fleet over fish the quota, and the season closes!

rpe, I understand that, but recreational fish count towards the total quota for the season, and must be reported. As far as tuna goes, recreational gets about 30-40% of the total for the year.

No quotas.

And most boats are going into Mexican waters-10 fish per day limit but some fish (dorado-marlin) count as 5 fish.

I don't know how to copy a link on this tablet but Google this site for the west coast regs.
After further review, apparently there are NO recreational quotas on the west coast? I don't know why they are exempt, since the Atlantic and Gulf have limits. Good Luck and enjoy while you can.
