The question about level winds
William Shakespeare Jr patented the first level wind mechanism in 1896. Inspired my a machine lathe mechanism
They were copied and widely available on reels in the 20s and 30s
Drastically reduced backlash or so was the claim
I have some Meiselbach reels that predate the level wind.

This thing turned out to be a pretty cool solution to my storage problem

No, We weren't able to afford much. I believe the reel or two we had were pfleugers (sp). Later, when i got in college i fished with a 1926 Shakespeare direct drive, and then later a Mitchell 300 spinning reel. I had a hard time adjusting to spinning. While i liked the concept, i never developed the control that i could have with a bait caster. Just Sayin..RJS

I also like old fishing advertising material.
Some of the old reels I have had an original cost of Around $7.00
Did a little research . That $7.00 in 1940 is like $122.50 today
I can’t imagine a lot of people had an extra $7.00 to spend
Guy must have really wanted it!!!

Talked with some older gentlemen about some reels in my collection that are pristine condition
They told me that often these reels were gifts from wives or children or whatever
They took them out to use em, backlashes the bejesus out of em and stuck em on a shelf.

Got an ambassador 5000 circa 1965 still in the box with tools , paperwork and original price tag from Rinks department store. Friend gave it to me. Said his dad couldn’t figure out how to cast it and put it away. That friend has since passed. Miss him
That thing sat untouched for 55 years.
Amazing. It didn’t even have dust on it!
I keep that one in a place of honor.
Same guy gave me an ambassador 5500 black reel he got when he came home from Vietnam in 68. Same deal. Only no box.

Ben: I was a partner at North Texas Marine when we opened in 1960. We stocked some Ambassador reels along with others. We were burglurized one night. They took a Evinrude motor, some reels from the showcase. There were possibly half dozen Ambassador reels on the top shelf, but they left them, i guess thru ignorance, and took less expensive bait casting reels instead. Just Sayin...RJS

Lucky break.
Let me share one with you
I have a truck with a Toneu cover . Yo this cover I rigged a little rack so I can hang my rods and reels suspended so they aren’t rattling around in the bed.
Any way I’m comming back from a guide trip and I have 4 rigs worth about $4k strapped in
Got home late , left em hanging and someone broke into my truck
Stole my suitcase and a 12 pack of beer and left the fishing rigs hanging
If they woulda just crouched down and looked up it woulda been a sad day for me

you were very fortunate. I have lost over the last 50 years two rifles and one hand gun I would have never sold, but theives took. I collectred adequate insurance but they were special, highly tuned and I love them.

Yes, I was wiped out when someone, or more than one broke into the boat storage barn and took al myu reels off the rods. I think i lost 3 or so Shimano bait casters and two or three spinning reels but Insurance covered all of the loss.

But I was never as attached as I was one of those rifes. I was still in the Air force and had little to do in the evenings. So a master sergeant helped and coached me in building a custom rifle. i build a Mauser action, .270 Winchester hunting rifle with contrasting fore end tip, pistol grip and such, with checkering, diamond enlays, and such just so I would know how to do those things. Know what you mean on the rifles
Had a pre 64 model 70 in 270 that I had some accurizing done. It was like an extension of me. If I could see it I could hit it
Used to bust jackrabbits at 300 yards. Killed 4x4 mulies last two years I had it
Broke my heart to sell it
Kid was sick.

I never lost any money on my losses. When i collected on my custom Mauser, I wound up buying a .357 Smith and Wesson revolver 8 3/8 bbl, and it was totally custromized at the factory for a hand gun writer in my hometown. It was a tack driver. I hand loaded and once i was shooting some hand loads and at a bench rest, w/ scope, and hand loads shot a 3 and 3/8 group off a bench rest at 50 yards. I though, 'Wow, I'll try at a 100 yards, and shot a 6 3/4 group. I saved the target.

Years later am promoted and moving to NY. When we arrived at the hotel in Rockland County, the kids wanted to go see our new house. So we go and look at the ouse and do not unpack everything in the car. That night, because of our Texas tags, someone broke into the trunk and stole the pistol and my 35 mm Camera. I collected full price, but again, it was irreplacable.

Say, ill bet when i was at F.E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne we paid some of yhour bills for the missle silos in the north! Ha, we knew where they were going, even tho it was supposed to be secret. Just Sayin...RJS

No I was in Tucson. Probably paid for some of our stuff too. Thanks for that. Especially the kick butt fuel sample thermos that kept coffee hot for 3 days I “acquired” !!! Appreciate that.
I got to my posting a year after the Damascus Ark disaster.
Tense times.
