I have been collecting antique bait casters casually for past several years.
It’s kinda fun finding one you haven’t seen before and doing some research on them
I have about 65 in collection. Nothing too valuable. Some are in very good shape
Anyone else share this interest?
Ben Bragg: YES, in fact i had been colecting much the same way, just hit or miss, primarily the older the better, and some of the more off types. I guess i had 15 to 20 and hav given them all to my son, Brad, in Florida who is also a fisherman.
I have tried to get a photo on Stage, but have not been able to manage. For some reason, I don't know how to transfer it from Email, to my photo section.. That's where it has to be in order to add to Stagess. Just Sayin...RJS

Sounds like a great hobby,,,enjoy
They are great conversation pieces.
It’s interesting to follow the inventions and technology improvements
I think the very earliest reels manufactured in the U.S. were made by watch and clock makers. Only later did others enter the biz. You could often find strange or primative models at flea markets and depending upon the price which was often negotiable, you might be able to add two or three more to your collection. Any idea how many years back it was when they added the level wined
I’ve been looking for some early examples. Meek in particular.
Have a couple VomHoffe
Well, Ben: I dont think I have anything as rare as what you have named. Just Sayin...RJS
This reel is a Montgomery reel with level wind. Was told it was pre world II. There is no drag, your thumb is your drag and no anti reverse.
Yep! Typical of pre-warII reels. You had to really learn your thumb business. And the old rayon lines would usually rot in t a year or two. Level Winds and pauls, would also get worn out rather quickly. just Sayin...RJS
Robert did you used to fish with these back in your 40s??
Seriously I don’t think I have seen a Montgomery before. Looks like that’s in nice condition
Looks like a Montgomery ward sport king. According to my quick research
Company called Bronson was a big manufacturer back then. They built a lot of reels for major chains back in the day. Wouldn’t be surprised if Bronson was original manufacturer.
Looks similar to some examples I have. The white Bakelite accent ring looks very familiar
That is a nice example
Get this, I was looking for a case to display my reels. Came across an old timex watch display case.
Never put two and two together. Watch box and a casting reel are about the same size. Picked it up for cheap . After a rewire and a little cleaning it’s fully functional. Lights up and rotates.
Thought I had a pic but I don’t.
I’m stuck in Mexico. Maybe I’ll have wife take a pic. This thing is pretty neat
