Minnow trap Mike. Weights?
on the coast here in tx. we bait that trap with fish scraps, a few shrimp, crab shells&scraps. then set it in ditches and drains in an around salt water marsh. come back later to collect kill fish, better known as mud minnows.great live bait for all game fish, but especially good for flounder.
Here are pictures of the snake that caught himself in my minnow trap last June. Hard to see him in the basket. See second photo where I dumped him out. I think he drowned - at least I hope he did. Anyone recognize what kind of snake this is?

Make sure you check all the fish in it. I have often caught baby bass in mine which must be released.
If you want a mess of creek chubs come morning... half open can of soft cat food will load you up overnight!!! Just stake it off on the bank and drop it in a slow moving pool in your favorite little stream!

Northern water snake . Pretty common in my area. Non venomous but can be aggressive. Kinda have a stinky smell. Will wipe out the minnows in your trap.
You can make a cheap disposable one with a 2 liter soda bottle. Just cut the top part of the bottle off, flip it around, and stick it back in the rest of the bottle and put some duck tape around it to hold the 2 pieces together. I put a rock in the bottom so it doesn't float away and use a piece of bread for bait.
Freshwater Fin: Yes, there were no minnows left in my trap, so he had a very good last meal! This one was caught in NE South Carolina - do northern water snakes go that far south? Maybe he was visiting his southern water snake cousin. I hope he was non venomous because my grandkids swim in this area.

Hi Mr. Mike,
I read once that you can place an egg in it. That it would draw in a pesky snake into it and trap it. It's a DIY thingy if you have one around the house that you want to catch & release.
