So true. And I’m guilty.
Don’t always wear it
Anyone ever fish dog so bad it’s terrifying. Recently went to st Clair early morning dog so thick I couldn’t see 30 ft. Following my gps at about 15 mph Because any faster seemed perilous, and heard high hp outboards behind me at high speed . stopped to put up my Running light for some protection, but while I’m at it , thinking “this is really dumb” I’m a sitting duck. Scary as hell.
What do you guys do in similar situations

If you fish down here in the fog, especially in and around the Mississippi River you better have radar, a bright strobe light and an extremely loud horn. Quite a few duck hunters and fishermen have been run over by barge and ship traffic. Personally, I won’t do it. The ducks and fish can wait for it to clear.

I am a true believer in my kayak to wear mine. Don't leave the garage without it on before i get to the dock.

I religiously wear an auto inflate PFD While fishing on my boat
Had a stroke several years back and just a confidence thing. The inflatables are so comfortable I forget I’m wearing it
So today , I unhooked a nice saugeye and left the net on my casting deck. After untangling lure from net I quickly caught another smaller fish I flipped in the boat . While walking back to the livewell to deposit this fish, I tripped on the net and ended up face first into my passenger seat .
After regaining my senses, righting myself , straightening my bent glasses and wiping blood off my face, I started thinking that could have gone a whole lot worse. Coulda ended up overboard.
Anyone ever have a close call?

Glad you're okay. I guess we need those close calls to remind us how quickly it can go bad.

I piss in a bucket, then pour it out. Much safer that way, and keeps wind from catching it. Lot cleaner, works for me. Life jacket always a good idea, regardless to whether or not you swim. There’s times when you could possibly have a long way to swim!

About a year ago my cousin, we were both 75 YO, asked if I wore my PFD all the time. Told him no, only when I was running the boat. Than asked the question that hit me in the head. If the wind is blowing and the current is boiling in the opposite direction and you fell out could you get back to the boat? Of course the answer was "NO". Now I keep my auto inflate on at all times. Cheap insurance and a way not to turn into crab bait in Lake Pontchartrain.

Good idea Oil scout, every year here in NC some crabber goes overboard and a few days later they find a floater.

We just lost a professional crabber about a month ago. 30'+/- crab boat. Went out as usual at dusk. Didn't return so a search was started and his boat was found jammed up at one of the bridges. His body was found a few days later. Not that age matters but he was 65 and by himself.

I was heading down towards the water caring two rods in one hand and my tackle box in the other stepping from rock to rock pretty steep. Then boom I stepped on a loose rock and fell 10 to 15 feet down the rocks breaking both rods and scattering tackle everywhere. Got a concussion and then had two seizures. Then tried to fish. It took 11 fireman and paramedic s to get me up the hill 4 days in the hospital very close call.

Yeah, went out to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel for stripers. Ran into fog so thick almost couldn't see the bow of the boat. Should have turn around and headed back to port but I was on another persons boat and he wanted to keep on, using GPS. GPS can get us to the tunnels islands but Hampton Roads, between the Navy and commercial vessels heading to Norfolk/Newport News and Baltimore, are the busiest shipping lane on the east coast. We ended up in the channel and had a huge container ship pass us so close it tried to suck our boat into it's hull. Thank goodness for plenty of power on the boat and quick action by the skipper.

We ended up catching one keeper and almost losing our lives. Needless to say I've never fisher with him again.

I grew up on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay and know how fickle she can be and how quickly things can blow up. Probably should have been a little more adamant about not getting into fog that thick. Mike

I was at st Clair River this spring . First time there. Terrible fog
Had chart on depth finder chart on and Was proceeding down river at cautious pace. Off in the not so distant distance I saw what turned out to be a car ferry crossing in front of me.
Did an emergency u turn and after a brief wait again proceeded down river , only to discover another ferry going opposite direction !!!
Completely wierded me out !!
Finally made it to destination and had a fantastic day.
