Put the braid on the spool, what ever amount you want, then fill the spool with the mono. Tie the line to a stationary object and walk off all the line around the yard, trees bushes any thing that won't fray the line. Then untie the braid from the spool, retie the mono and rewind onto the reel. You shouldn't have to replace the backing. As stated before you can use a partial spool of braid, 25-50 yards is enough, the mono is a lot cheaper. You can replace the braid 3 or more times using 50 yards at a time. Braid is expensive. Why waste it filling up your spool when you can use
cheap mono instead?

Another trick to save money: When your braid gets old and starts to fray and weaken,
reverse the line and you can start over again with a new length of working line. You can
do this by putting the line on another reel -- or an empty line spool -- then on another one,
then back on your original reel. I usually use just a casting length of braid plus about ten
yards, connect\ed to the mono backing with a double uni knot (see U Tube).

I want to put braid on my spinning reel. I have 150 yards of 20# power pro. How do I calculate how much 20# mono I use for backing. I want to make sure I use all 150 yards of braid and that I fill my spool properly. Thanks for all that honest answers that don't make fun of my poor math skills.

Lots of guys put Mono on to keep the Braid from slipping as for me, I use Double Sided Tape. Here’s what I do

1. Clean spool of all old line
2. Wipe spool clean with Alcohol or Finger Nail Polish remover
3. Let spool dry
4. Install Double-sided Tape the full width of the spool
5. Tie a good slip-knot and pull it down real tight with the knot at the top and Reel Take-up all the way to the Left
6. Load up your Reel With Braid (using a damp rag holding the Braid semi-firm) Reel away!

I’ve never had a problem with Baitcast or Spinning Reels regarding “SLIPPAGE”. Fish-on.........
