I want to put braid on my spinning reel. I have 150 yards of 20# power pro. How do I calculate how much 20# mono I use for backing. I want to make sure I use all 150 yards of braid and that I fill my spool properly. Thanks for all that honest answers that don't make fun of my poor math skills.

If memory serves, 20# braid equals 6# mono in diameter. Just realized that was no help. Move over, I'm with you on the math skills.

So how much 20 pound mono (if that was the only line you were to use) will your reel hold? It should say on it. Or on the box it came in. And how much 6 pound mono will it hold?

I have both of those numbers. But how do i know when I have spooled the right amount of mono from the bulk spool.

Foodfisher is right. 20 lb braid is roughly equivalent to 6 mono. Lets assume the reel will hold 200 yards of 6 lb. mono, then you want 150 of 20 lb, you would then start with 50 yards, approx. of mono, then finish with the braid. I don't think there's anything magic about having exactly 150 yards. Just Sayin...RJS

Now that's funny. I am just waiting for the person that asks what about the 3rd person.

Take a measurement in the yard
So if u wanted to put 50yds of mono on,you would measure out 150 ft
Hope that helps

You are correct on the issue about nothing magic on using exactly 150 yards of braid. It's just that I have done this before and always end up with so many partial spools of line and I can't bring myself to just throwing it away.

Use the extra line on the spools to make leaders with the hook and a snap swivel, if you use a snap swivel. That way you would have set ups already made.

If you have an extra spool, wind the braid on and then top it off with mono paying attention to yardage to top off.. pull the spool off and rewind onto another spool (mono will then be on the bottom as backer).

I'm with Doug on this one.

I just use straight mono, problem solved. LOL.
I've been using mono since the late 50s.
