I use mono on certain outfits...mostly when I'm trolling offshore. ...20# pink Ande and 20# Ande Hi-Vis mono. But bottom fishing I use braid w pink ande leader.
The braid makes a huge difference in feel. Ive dropped live baits down 450ft off islamorada and can feel the bait swimming on the braid. It cuts water better and you get far less belly in the line and zero stretch.
Theres clearly times mono is better because braid has no forgiveness and folks who dont use it right break rods like theres no tomorrow. But throwing lures I love braid. Also when your lure gets hung up with braid I can pull hard enough to usually straighten the hook and get my lure back.
But everything is a preference and they all have their place

So you mean take a measurement *by* the yard *in* the yard.

Really there are 10 kinds of people: those who understand binary and those who don’t.

👍👍 I keep a couple spools, drag caps and shafts from old/broke reels and stick them in a cordless drill to reverse my braid when it gets old and reverse the braid so the used part of the braid is tied to the backing and the un used braid is now on top so i get double the life out the braid before I have to have new braid spooled on again.

Now that’s out-of-the-box thinking.

I end up with partial spools also, but they work great for leaders and even for really tough sewing thread when you need some heavy duty but small diameter thread.

Do it backwards. Spool on the braid until you’ve used up the spool. Then tie on the mono and finish filling the spool on the reel. Tie the end of the mono to another empty spool with a bolt through it so you can chuck it in a reversible drill. Remove all the line up to the braid. Cut them apart and on another empty spool remove the braid. Both spools now contain all the line that will fit the reel. Reinstall the mono then attach the braid and install it. Be sure to use tension so it doesn’t come off loose or go back on loose.

Doug Lemmon is dead on. Also, why do you want 150 yards of line on your
reel -- one and a half times the length of a football field?? I put on only 50
yards of braid with the rest being mono backing. (Actually, 25 yards is probably
plenty, unless you're fishing for very large fish or for bonefish or permit on
the flats.)

I would not back 20 lb braid with 6 lb mono unless you want to lose it if you get down to it.

Why not use just braid? It will cast as good but if you want exact tell us the amount your spool can hold. Not rocket science.

Too expensive and i can't get a spool that has the amount my large reel holds

I want to put braid on my spinning reel. I have 150 yards of 20# power pro. How do I calculate how much 20# mono I use for backing. I want to make sure I use all 150 yards of braid and that I fill my spool properly. Thanks for all that honest answers that don't make fun of my poor math skills.

What size reel are you spooling? Also you want to use the similar size backing as your braid, 20lb braid has the diameter as 6lb monofilament, so use 6lb backing

I have to ask.....why do you want mono backing? The braid may slip when trying to spool. Are you just trying to fill the spool?
I would personally tie a loop knot to the spool, tape if necessary. Wind it on and go fishing!
That's just me though.
