Thought about that and it's a great idea. I just don't have 2 reels the same size.

I want to put braid on my spinning reel. I have 150 yards of 20# power pro. How do I calculate how much 20# mono I use for backing. I want to make sure I use all 150 yards of braid and that I fill my spool properly. Thanks for all that honest answers that don't make fun of my poor math skills.
Rocky i have been using braid for the last 3 years and have read all the suggestions of mono or tape and have yet to see the need. I tie a knot that does not slip on to the reel and braid all the way till the leader.
I would go with 50 yards of 8Lb mono. uni knot on about 75 yards of braided line for freshwater. when putting the line on I place a small piece of masking tape over the knot. You can run the line for two seasons, even swap out line end for end if needed. The only way I would put a whole 150 yards is for saltwater. As you don't cast over 100 ft. and you can save money on the line, by only using 75 yds/ 225ft. Saving money on line costs, unless you get it for free.
do a search for my old post "loading a spincaster". I asked a similar question, you can see all the imaginative suggestions I received.
I will. Us CA fishermen have to stick together!!
Ahhhh....to get it just right I just let the shop fill my spools from their 1000 yard spools.
Those 150 yard spools of braid are one of life's greatest challenges.
ππ I keep a couple spools, drag caps and shafts from old/broke reels and stick them in a cordless drill to reverse my braid when it gets old and reverse the braid so the used part of the braid is tied to the backing and the un used braid is now on top so i get double the life out the braid before I have to have new braid spooled on again.
....if any of that makes senseπ
It does. And it saves money
Rocky can you make a 75 yd. cast? If not why not use half now and the other later? That way you get two new lines instead of just one. Backing is a lot cheaper than good braid.
I'm with you Larry M.... since the 60's for me. Never had an expensive spool of line catch a fish. It's always been what's on the enf that does the trick for me.

Morning,
I've always used mono, maybe if I was more of a finesse type of fisherman I would used something different. But for me mostly saltwater and using lures moving through the water at a pretty good clip, just my opinion I don't really think that it matters. I've caught lots of bonito, barracudas, and saltwater bass on mono. I guess that I'm just set in my old ways. LOL.

You are correct on the issue about nothing magic on using exactly 150 yards of braid. It's just that I have done this before and always end up with so many partial spools of line and I can't bring myself to just throwing it away.
I end up with partial spools also, but they work great for leaders and even for really tough sewing thread when you need some heavy duty but small diameter thread.
