Did you have to have both parents signatures to join? The signature thing caused problems with my parents. Mom was alright with it but Dad didn't want to sign. Don't know why and never did find out. The only letter I ever received from my father came thru the Red cross when my maternial great grand father died. He was one of my best teachers, how to fish, how to hunt, how to chase girls! And not to shoot ducks from under a hay trailer with a 10 gage shoot gun. I thought I was deaf for a week! That was a life time lesson I won't forget!

Dad was gone so only had mom to sign it.
My older brother was career Navy, photographer. My other brother was Army in Korea. I came along a lot later in mom's life. Mom's third husband.

I had just turned 17 when I joined.
We lived way out in the boonies in Alaska, only way to get there was to fly in. They had to fly in a magistrate to give me the test. Then they flew me the Anchorage for the physical at the army air force base. After that I flew to the Navy base on Kodiak Island to be sworn in.
Funny story, after being at the army base they called the bathroom the latrine. When I was at the Navy base I saw this old marine and asked him where the latrine was. Man did he come unglued, read me the riot act about what kind of marines are they making these days and told me that it's called a head and stomped off. Not too good of a start for me. LOL.

That would have been in 78-79. They had what they called a try one program for prior sevice people. You came in at the same rank you were discharged at and put in one year. If at the end of that time you could re-enlist for 4 more years. I found out that the Army guard was more than boy scouts with guns. I would have had to put in extra hours just to keep up with those kids and I didn't think it would be fair to be a SGT. and not know as much as they did. Great outfit and I did enjoy that year.

I went to school in Cheyenne Wyoming my Jr year and they had Army ROTC which I enrolled in, so I was screwed up to with head, deck, for, aft. One good thing came from Army ROTC was I learned the nomenclature and could field strip (in the dark) the M-1 rifle. ( peace)

It may have been an Ohio program, I don't know. But I agree, would be nice for someone needing something to do after they got out. Didn't pay very well. LOL

Cool, Thanks Fin, just your mentioning of them i can see them on the flight line just outside our prop shop at the time. C 123 were my favorites. Knew them like the back of my hand.

You couldn't tell it after a few dirt landing strips were encountered. Gen Westmoreland came through Panama on one that was as shiny as a new car bumper. Doubt if his saw dirt.

When I finally got there, it was discovered I had a scar on the lens of my left eye and was disqualified for flight while in Air Force ROTC. Later, on active duty, I was told by a flight surgeon that on average i did have 20/20 vision but the Air Force didn 't need pilots, they didn't even need officers!

So I took the deal of 6 months training and 7 1/2 years active reserves. Not 2 or 3 years later, another member of my training class went back on active duty, took flying trainng and flew for 8 to 10 years. It was too late for me. Just Sayin...:RJS

While I was in electronic school at Keesler on day after class three of the class were told to report to a building for testing but not told what testing was for. After four hours of testing, each one was sat down to talk with an officer. The first question he asked me was," why did you take the test because you can not be on flying status because you are wearing glasses". I told him I was ordered to report for testing and did not known what type of testing it was. That is when he told me it was for bombardier school. He did tell me that if it weren't for the glasses I would have been selected. I guess that was as close to making an officer as you can come and not make it. My electronic training paid off in the long run because I worked for Texas Instruments just shy of 34 years. I don't think they could have used a bombardier .

Three C's: You never know what God's master plan is. I never wanted to be anything but be an Airforce pilot.

Some of my friends never made it. One punched out over Germany and his chute did not open, some others spent time in the Hanoi Hilton. And then there was Agent Orange which finally got one classmate. Just Sayin...RJS
