Along the same line. Seen it before and by someone else doing the touching of the bait/lure they caught fish. My neice was one we always let change/touch baits/lures. She worked for an Italian restaurant and you can smell the garlic reeking from her pores! Think she must have eaten all the garlic in the place every day. Poor gal has a hard time getting a date. But how the fish are attracted to whatever see touched!

Hook up with a guide and see if he can find what you're doing wrong

That is my go to advice. So far it is the best advice I've seen on this one, even better than "Go Noles!!!"
Guides first job is to put you on fish, their second is to teach you how to catch those fish, if you have a problem.

I've fished my entire 30 years on this planet, and in the last 11 years I haven't caught a single one. Help.

So this is actually true... I live in Montana and we generally are fishing for trout in a lake. When I was a kid I would catch fish quite often, but I can't remember catching a fish since the time I was around 19. This isn't a joke, I fish quite a bit because I love to just be outdoors and on or around water, and that's all I chalk up fishing up to for me the past few days. When I say I'm going fishing, all that means in my mind is I'm going to sit in my boat and enjoy the sunshine and put a string in the water for no reason. I've tried every kind of bait, every kind of hook, and advice from hundreds of people who claim to be a expert. Nothing. Trolling, casting, doesn't matter... The fish exist, last weekend I was fishing from shore near a kid who I watched pull 5 or so fish from the lake in about a hour... At one point I yelled over and asked what he was using, he said just a worm on a hook... Me too kid, me too. True story, me and my wife were fishing one day at the river, she had caught a few fish, me nothing... At the end of the night she threw her empty hook in the water to clean it off, and cought another fish.

It has me confused and I would like to end this cycle this year and somehow catch a fish... Maybe someone on here can teach me something I haven't heard before.

What a pitiful story JustMike. Sorry for your suffering but I admire your persistence. If you were in my area I would see to providing you some private lessons. Not many thrills top fighting a big fish.
Good luck on your future endeavors!

Fishdancer, might have the right idea. That is the longest slump I have ever heard of. I think it could be the smell on your hands also. And there could be something to you being scared and the fish know it. I know the more confident I am, the better I do.

You didn't mention any details about your setup. Given that others were catching fish on the same bait as you, I am going to guess your rig is spooking the trout. So, I would go with a finer line, for trout in clear water I wouldn't go any higher than 6 lb test mono or fluorocarbon. I usually go with 2 lb test. Your rod should be flexible enough to prevent breakoffs of significantly bigger fish. Next I would use smaller and fine wire hooks like an Aberdeen in Size 12 or 10. With light line you shouldn't need a heavy weight. Use the lightest one that will reach where you believe fish may be. Lastly, though trout are usually close to the bottom, they can suspend so you should try different depth in the water column
Your best bet is to go to a local tackle ship and have them take a look at your setup. I'm sure they can offer suggestions to help figure out what the problem is.

Put a hook And bait on the line!
Switch hands or maybe go back to church.
Wait a minute, dry spells over... you caught some suckers with the story.

heres some sure fire techniques for you to try next time.As youre approached the water , you calmly but firmly say out loud" HERE, FISHY FISHY FISHY".......then wait ten seconds and repeat these words"HERE...FISHY FISHY FISHY"....Will work because my two best buds, bert and ernie, have never steered me wrong.

Get some cheap polarised glasses, you may not catch anymore but you will have great stories about the monsters you saw but just couldn't get in the boat.:)

Hire a guide one time. That person will show the ropes and you will be back in business.

I would get a guide and also perhaps use a fish scent to maybe cover yours.

Find someone with a permit and see if he would give you a Dupont lure.
