Ever since I can remember I have been fishing with spinning reels. Well now I am wanting to venture into the world of baitcaster setups. When I started using spinning reels I would change them to a right hand retrieve and eventually got tired of switching hands after casting and switch to left hand retrieve. I'm sure this is a common question but should I buy a right hand retrieve baitcaster setup or is it better to stick to my roots and buy a left hand retrieve?

I use both. I'm right handed and thee right hand retrieve works best for me.

I’m right handed and I learned to cast with my left hand. But I had a accident that caused me to loose 75% of the use of my left hand. During that time period it was next to impossible to find a left hand retrieve reel. About the only one was a spin cast. But time changes and casting reels are a lot more versatile. It was a blessing. I don’t have the opportunity to fish as often as I like. My casting reels just collect dust.

Sorry FT,I was thinking of boat rods, trolling rods, standup rods etc. Surf and Jetty fishing I've always only used spinning tackle. I forgot about all you guys that use speed squidders,or the modern versions of them.I seem to remember Surf distance casting contests being won with revolving spool reels back in the day.

No apology needed Fred. I'm a little slow answering cuz I did one of my rare boat trips yesterday so I was off line yesterday. BTW the casting contests are still won by casting reels. Those guys are unreal but I don't think you could use the techniques actually fishing. Fortunately you don't have to throw 800 to a 1000 feet to catch fish.

I fish frequently and use both a bait caster and a two spinning reels. I cannot stand for the spinning reel to retrieve with the right hand nor the bait caster to retrieve on the left. It's kinda crazy but I have used that combination all my life. But then again it is a personal preference. If you use the reels in the order you are comfortable with you will get used to the combination you use on a regular basis.

Why would you want to fight a fish with your weaker arm? Cast with strong side, reel with off side. If you can cast with either arm, so much the better. Back in the day, there were few lefty reels available, but now all the majors offer their better reels in both left and right retrieve.
