Ever since I can remember I have been fishing with spinning reels. Well now I am wanting to venture into the world of baitcaster setups. When I started using spinning reels I would change them to a right hand retrieve and eventually got tired of switching hands after casting and switch to left hand retrieve. I'm sure this is a common question but should I buy a right hand retrieve baitcaster setup or is it better to stick to my roots and buy a left hand retrieve?

Theresa your answer. Lol. For me when I buy a reel I want to be completely comfortable using it so that as the first question I ask my self when buying gear.

Get left hand retrieve if you hate switching, no difference in the reel, just preference. I fish right handed and I don't mind switching.

Yeah I figured I would be getting a left hand retrieve. Just wanting to get a second opinion

Have you ever tried casting left hand, takes some practice and in some circumstances can work for you, direction you need to cast. I have all my spinning reels handles on right side, sometimes I cast with left or right hand

I consider myself heavily right handed. Anything that requires precision gets done with my right. Left hand is like a clamp, for holding things, while my right fixes them.LOL. I was brought up using spinning gear and casting with my right, cranking with my left. So when I started with baitcasters, I bought left handed reels. Use the same motion with both. Why change depending on which rod you pick up? I fish with both every time I go out. Makes sense to me.

I know what you mean, I'm left handed writer but do a lot of things right hand. Depends on situation which one I use. In some tight spots left hand casts can be the difference between getting a hook up and nothing.

If I tried casting with my left, not only would my 150odd lures in my tacklebag be gone, but all the trees around would look like Christmas! I'm a firm believer in Clint Eastwoods famous statement "A man's got to know his limitations ". And I do.

Lol I can understand that, have taken friends fishing and tried to educate them on casting. My way is to get the length of line to about 2ft out then concentrate on where you want to cast, tell them not to look at the rod but just they spot they aim at. Many years back we were casting under tree branches around 3ft above the water, cast either hand and never hooked the branches.

I agree with Fred. If your used to cranking with your left hand, do it. Im picking out my first freshwater bait caster today.

I am so right handed, it is embarrassing. Cast right, reel left. When I started baitcasting I didn’t know there were left handed reels. I have 2 of those now and hope to try them this weekend.
Go with what you are comfortable with...bottom line.

I am right handed but I use a left handed reel and it feels the best to me. You have to remember that back in your dads days there was no such thing as a reel with the handle on the left side side were reels with a handle on the right side of the reel were made. So what might have been a right handed reel then does not fit the bill for most of us today so don't twist your brain to much just buy the one that feels best to you.
