K say your right handed, as your approaching your shoulder at about an 80 or 90 degree’s to cast, rotate your wrist to the left so as your rod eyelets are facing kelt. About the same time the lure hits the water, thumb the spool. Do this two trips and you have it. The rotation makes a world of difference. Sorry my phone can’t spell!

This is from an article I read a while back.

Zoey

Diagnose Your Backlash
How and when the backlash occurs will tell you exactly what you are doing wrong. If it is happening early in the cast, the lure is moving too fast, and you need more tension on your spool control knob. If it is happening in the middle of the cast while the bait is traveling forward and upward, you might have to adjust the magnetic or centrifugal braking. If backlash is occurring late or just before the bait touches down, you are probably neglecting to thumb the spool in time.

Hi Sweetie,
I will go out back this morning and try it, thank you. When Dad started teaching us how to surf fish. We always had to use both hands to cast. I still do when using his setup on the surf. Since we are going to start pier and bridge fishing, i'll be using my setup which is lighter and I can cast it with one hand, that's when I get most of my tangles. Don't worry about grammar and spelling. I wouldn't notice anyhow, if people corrected me everytime. The FS emails I get would triple :)

I have used spinning reels all my life, 56 now, and I have found that I can do everything with a spinning reel that one can do with a baitcaster except for distance.
I use a bc for crank and top water and spinning for everything else.
Seems like guys switch to bc out of peer pressure...the fish don't care lol.

I have to save this one. That's the first time I've ever seen something like that. If it works on my surf rods it will save hours of cussin.

Hi Mr. Flytier,
Lol, I use it at least two or more times, everytime I go out.

As soon as you see the splash from your bait, break the spool with your thumb. That is after you set it up properly for the weight of your bait. This works for every brand reel that I have ever used as each have their own personality. Also, using too light weight line will cause a bird's nest every time.

Depending on the reel, some have the release in the back of the spool, the easiest to learn, your thumb will be the brake. When the lure stops taking out line, the spool should be stopped. Line size is another, you cannot use lite line on a bait caster. Relax, I've been using one since I was 14 and still get them. BTW NEVER cast into the wind.

So I have been fishing since I was 12. Ive always used spinning rods when bass fishing. I recently bought a baitcaster to learn on and its just so frustrating. Ive watched a couple videos and I understand a little on how to adjust the reel to the wait of your lure but I still get backlash and it just ends my day fishing with me cutting all my line off and then using my spinning rod. I see how the baitcaster are useful and I would like to get it down and add it to my fishing arsenal. Any tips or anything for a beginner?

I have the same problem. Have 2 baitcasting outfits I've never used. Need to practice in yard before I make a fool of myself on the lake.
