Very nice jig, and write up. Now I'll be spending more money as I'll need the eyes. I have everything else. For sure would be something that the crappie around here haven't seen yet, and most times that's a plus.

What size hook are you using

The hook shown is a size 4 jig hook. I use a 6 or even an 8 when I make them for ice fishing. I also make bigger ones (up to a 2/0) for bass and walleye. For the big ones, I just bend the hook into shape.

You won't find them in any store. I've never seen any besides the ones I make.

You can buy lead dumbbell eyes, but if you want glass ones, you have to make them. Get the beads in the fishing section where you find stuff to make crawler harnesses, just make sure to get the glass ones and not the plastic ones (too light for a jig head). Use the same kind of wire that you tie to the hook to put the beads together and tie them on like dumbbell eyes.

In the fly-fishing world we call this a balanced fly. I tie a Leach pattern as well as others in a balanced design. I use a straight pin secured "loosely"to the top of the hook to hold the bead. The purpose is to create a horizontal presentation. To determine if you have it right after you secure the pin and bead(eyes) run a piece of mono through the eye of the hook. Suspend the hook by the mono, adjust the overhang of the pin till horizontal , permanently secure pin in place and continue to finish the fly.

This can be tied using a straight shank hook as well as long as the fly sits horizontally in the water.
For eyes I use plastic bead chain and sewing straight pins with the round plastic head. If I need more weight forward I may make a few wraps of lead free wire behind the bead to aid in creating balance.

I use stainless steel jewelry posts that I buy at Walmart. Very cheap and easy to work with. You get a couple hundred for a buck or two and you get a couple jigs/flies out of each post.

I also make a fly version of that jig. Bluegill seem to especially like it.
