It’s for leader to tippet connections.

If you truly a beginner I would ignore them for now. Great if you start euro nymphing.

What would be the other option, just tying flies onto the leader?

From flies to flyline. Tie flies to the tippet. Clich knot. And tippet into the leader. Use a triple surgeons knot. Its simpler. Leader to flykine with loop to loop connection. One less thing to worry about at first. This is in reverse order of build tie leader onto.line first then tippet then flies.

Good to know. Are you talking about a triple surgeons knot from the tippet onto the leader?

Start by dropping about half of them before you realize they are a pain to use.

I've used the with furled leaders (twisted or braided leaders). Too small and too much effort to keep them on for too long. But you have to figure out what works best for your fishing style.

Alright, here's the deal: I see this is a swivel, but then the tippets are attached. Do I tie the swivel onto my leader and then attach the tippet to one of the rings. leaving everything together? Or do I take the tippet rings off and use the swivel to keep them together?

I use them for all my fly fishing. They aren’t heavy enough to sink a dry fly unless you are using a size 20 or smaller. Then I just dab a little dry fly floatant on it.

The snap swivel is merely PACKAGING. If you choose to use, BE SURE TO SECURE EITHER THE TIPPET OR THE LEADER.... BEFORE REMOVING RING FROM SNAP SWIVEL ! I avoid using them with dries, but find them quite useful with nymphs. Steelhead fishing, they allow me to change tippet (for "stealth"), while leaving a heavy tapered leader on, so I can turn over the larger flies. My biggest concern with using them is the "hinge" they create (unlike a surgeons), so I usually limit my tippet to 24" or less, even..... kinda making the "stealth factor" moot.
Lord knows, how many "gotta haves" & "gotta learn"(s) there are , when it comes to the sport of fly fishing. I was taught by my great uncle, down near Branson and the Ozarks in the early 60's, split-bamboo rod, hand-tied flies AND pieced leaders. I DID NOT have "nearly all the gear, I need" ......then...., and not real sure if I do today ! Lol !

I use them for wet and dry fly fishing. They don’t weigh the drys down. And I try to tie them at home. I’ll get one on the table and pick it up with a wet finger. Poke the tipped
the tipped or leader tip through and tie with a barrel knot. Then tie the tippet with a barrel know, much better than other knots for strength and longevity. The ones I have are very small. A larger size would be easier. Before getting some tippet rings I used QuickClips with them tied shut with flytying thread like finishing a fly. They still floated fine. But the rings are better.

Take a ring off and tie the leader and tippet using the knot shown, or your preferred knot.
