First timer here, what do I do with this?

Alright, here's the deal: I see this is a swivel, but then the tippets are attached. Do I tie the swivel onto my leader and then attach the tippet to one of the rings. leaving everything together? Or do I take the tippet rings off and use the swivel to keep them together?

Take a ring off and tie the leader and tippet using the knot shown, or your preferred knot.

Tie the end of your leader to the last tippet ring, then open the snap swivel and take off the ring you tied to (this keeps you from losing all the damn rings on the ground).

Now that you've got a tippet ring on the end of your leader, just tie your tippet to the ring. It saves you from losing leader length every time you add tippet with a blood or surgeon's knot.

It's also really handy if you're going down more than two tippet diameters. Strongly preferred for nymphs and streamers, maybe wet flies, but it has a tendency to sink your leader if you're using dries.

You remove the ring. But tie your tippet on first then remove it to make your life easier.

I can’t believe I never thought of that. I’ve lost so many tippet rings with cold fingers and bad eyesight

Dude I never predicted how much of an issue cold fingers were going to be. It’s like a -30 skill bonus to dexterity

Swivel keeps them together. Just leave the swivel and rings in a bag. YouTube how to use tippet rings. There’s a good 5 minute Rio video. It’ll explain better anything anyone can type out.

Tippet rings are good for connecting your leader to tippet. Let’s say you have a 5x leader that’s 9ft, only a certain amount is that 5x diameter. Every time you snag, change flies it gets shorter and shorter. By using a tippet ring you add more tippet so instead of losing the length of your leader, it will be the tippet instead.

Not sure how much you know about the basics of fly fishing so I don’t know if that makes sense haha

I started tying my own leaders this season and wonder about using some or not. Maybe just a preference thing I suppose?

I use them in my euro leader at the end of the siter because 90% of the time only the tippet below the ring will be in the water. I pretty much don't use them in any other circumstance.

Use them only for nymph fishing. Tie the ring( keep the on the swivel until it’s tied and then take it off. Tie the very first ring) on the end of ur leader the tie ur tippet to the ring. Clinch knot is what I use. As u nymph u will get hung up and break off. u just replace the tippet. U will need a nymphing leader as well, easy to make.. YouTube it, depend on water 10-25 ft of leader before the ring.

Do not use rings for top water or dry fly fishing.

How I use them, Tight lines

Just like the money spent buying a new tapered leader every week 🙃
