I cast right and reel left. Enough said. That works for me, but I don't think it matters to the fish.

Welcome from another newbie. Do whatever feels natural for you. I am right handed, cast with the right, reel with the left

I spin cast with my left hand crank with me right. Fly rod with my left, squeeze the trigger on the Plueger reel with my left when it's time to move. The rest of the time the line is on top of my feet or in the water or in the air. Jer

Amen to that. Right handed: holds Rod in right hand , reels with the left hand. Makes sense to me. Why change hands?

thats it, the way Ive always done. Until about 2 weeks ago my right wrist has got bad and had to switch the handle. Hate it, Ive got used to it now. Only good thing is it makes the fish feel bigger.

If able , Ill switch handle back to left side of spinnining ,,, cast right , reel left. strangely so many I see casting right & reeling right ,,, seems like a waste of time , if your not forced to , like I am right now

Besides fishing, I've played rec basketball for about 40 years, in gyms and on outdoor courts. A lot of the time, playing with the same core group of guys. About 15 years ago I overheard a player comment to another "Red always goes to his right". Now, I've used mostly spinning gear for my fishing exploits since my teens, so reeling with the left is second nature. I translated that into a conscious effort to go left and shoot lefty (baseline reverse layups, drives, lefty putbacks and short hooks) enough to prevent the defenders overplaying me to the right. It worked well; I get about a third of my points with my left hand.

But there's no way I could write an intelligible sentence with my left!

I write left-hand but do things mostly right. People told me years ago I was doing it wrong by changing hands but to me everyone to his own, as long as it works for you. Btw I always outfished them so who was doing it wrong.

For a lefty, I like a right-handed reel with the handle on the right side it only seems normal to me and my response is faster and it just feels right.

You did not state whether you are throwing a baitcaster or a spinning rod? With a spinning rod you cast with your left hand & reel in right. With a baitcaster you cast with your left hand, hold the rod with your right, & switch hands, then reel in with your left. I can reel in left or right handed on my baitcaster since I started out with a Mitchell 300 spinning reel when I was a kid. This advice is for left handers. Seems kind of unusual for a baitcaster eh? When I bought my white Carbonlite 2 rod/reel baitcaster on sale for $120 2 years ago at Bass Pro they were sold out of right handed reels so I bought a leftie. It was too good to pass up. An excellent rod/reel I might add. The same one that Ott Defoe uses. Lucky in college I learned to play handball with my left.

I'm also a Lefty, or Southpaw, however you want to put it! Lefty's always think with the Right side of their Brain, so they are always in their Right mind! I've always casted with my left and reeled with my right, Spinning, Baitcast, or Flycasting! I know what you mean about having a hard time finding a baseball glove that was a problem for me also! Thanks I'm also new to the forum, I've been reading it for a while now, never felt inclined to reply until now

Welcome fishercool fellow lefty

I normally cast left-handed and crank the reel with my right. I had a bout with tennis elbow a few years ago and so had to cast right-handed for a while. Even after I got over the elbow problem I still occasionally will cast with the right hand. I am sort of mixed handed. I throw, write, and eat left-handed but I shoot, play pool, swing a bat, and ax right-handed. Then there are a lot of things that I have no prefered hand like swinging a hammer, playing tennis, or do wood carving. I am right-eyes and right-footed.

I'm left handed. Totaly. I've had teachers hit my left hand fingers with a metal edged wooden ruler when I was writing left handed. One teacher pulled me out of my desk by my ear. Thank God they were forced to stop doing those things. But I'm still left handed
I'm surprised there are so many south paws on this site. It MUST mean that being left handed makes you a GREAT fisherman !

I'm severely right handed, shoot, and cast with my right, crank spinning and baitcasters with my left. The only exception is deep sea fishing, trolling, baitfishing or jigging I crank with my right hand. Really no choice as they don't make left-hand big game reels.

Cast with right - reel with left - xcept a couple trolling reels which I was given that are right handed so have adapted over the years.
