I hate to one up you but I have been at it for over 70 yrs. first head boat was the Mayflower out of Sheepshead Bay ! Remember the days no size restrictions, no bag limits, and $5.00 charge to board. Now that was the GOOD old days !!

Head boat? I'm 70 and I've never heard that term ever used up here on LI.

I can tell you how I catch bass here in southern Indiana where the water is 60 degrees and the thermal is 78. However, I believe you are interested in fishing where you are. What type fishing are you doing in North Idaho?

We have very few places to fish trout. The water here gets too hot too quickly. When I go for trout, I use an open face spinner and an in-line spinner lure. No size to them ( 8" to 10" ) at most. They all get caught a day or two after they are stocked. I do catch some cats by accident while fishing for bass. I do lake fishing. This is an odd spring. The bass are just now starting to spawn. I am sure the water is not above 65 degrees here yet.

You are in very good fishing country. Hope you do well this season.

Cheers!
Richard

Way back when I first started fishing I was walking the banks of one of he places I liked and came upon an old guy sitting on the bank fishing. I noticed he had a pretty good stringer of catfish so I asked him what he was using. He held up a jar and said I could help myself as he was handing me a baggie to put the stuff in. I got the jar open and about gagged at the smell but still stuck my fingers in the goo and put some in the baggie. "what is that stuff?" I asked him, and without hesitating he said, "dog shit." he saw I was pissed and explained that it was some stuff he put together. He then asks if I want to know the secret to fishing and of course I said "sure." He says that every time before going out to fish he plays with his wife's coochie and gets his fingers all fishy smelling. I look him straight in the eye and tell him, "well let me know where you live so I can do the same before I go out," and walk away smiling.

Well, you covered the situation well. The only thing that might have been worse is to have run into a full grown grisly.

I’ll be 85 on June 1. Hope to be mining for Browns and Rainbows on my local CenCal Sierra streams. The water is pretty high from snow melt right now, and we’re getting some unusually strong thundershowers here in The Tulare County/Sequoia National Forest foothills. I’ll be using ultralight spinning tackle in the eddies or drop a worm under a bobber. Good luck to all the rest of you “Ole Timers”......Chuck

Hey Oldtimer, my first ever catch on rod and reel was in 1954 in a cattle farm pond just outside of Jackson Ms.

My dad was popper fishing for bream and my sister and I were on the beach with bobbers over minnows. My bobber went down and I set the hook but couldn't reel the critter in. That should give you a clue. At any rate I hollered for my dad to help. He reeled in a 2/12 to 3 foot moccasin. My very first catch.

It turns out my father was deathly afraid of any snakes after having experienced a young boy being swallowed by either a python or such in Papua New Guinea during WW11.

He told me to get him a stick to kill the thing with and all I could find was a 2x8 about 4' long. After he got finished cussing because he couldn't get a good grip on it, in true Marine Corp(the P is silent) tradition, he figured it out and dispatched the serpent thus my younger sister and I were saved to fish another day. Mike

Hey there old timer from another old timer fisherman. Looking for someone to go with. Where do you live?

If you use QUOTE REPLY instead of REPLY we will know who you are replying to. Pass it on and it will catch on. It makes for much better conversation. Thanks, Mike

Hi Lilly, if you and everyone else will use QUOTE REPLY when answering folk we will all know who you are replying to. Don't use reply, use QUOTE REPLY. I've only been to Biloxi once and loved it. You're very lucky except when the hurricanes roll through. I live in the Norfolk/ Va. Beach area so what you don't get we do. Happy fishing/tight lines. Mike

Randy, I'm coming up on my 69th year, and I agree with you, I'm still lovin' and learning. What I'm going to teach you about this site is to use QUOTE REPLY as opposed to REPLY because that will show who you are replying to. It will show their question and your answer. Tight Lines. Mike
