For channels, my go to is chicken liver. Number one make sure there is channels in the canals. Buy a container of liver and try to find the firmer pieces. Then cut the size desired with a sharp knife. Lob it out there and try to keep a slack line. Once you find them a number of baits will work on different days. Good luck and God bless. Dan

Put a bunch of the big red worms on the hook. Make sure you have enough weight to get the bait down to the bottom and resist the current somewhat. any bait should work, the smellier (?) the better.

most people here in central and northern Calif. use the clams that every bait shop sells. Like others have said here, catfish will eat just about anything. But, the freshwater clams are consistent.

I have used chicken liver for many years in lakes and rivers and I wrap plain old sewing thread around it and it holds very well. In the river I use shad cut up or store bought cut shad. Good luck and most of all have fun and enjoy fishing.

Get some Sonnys stink bait. I GET 30 to 40 each time I go. It's made for channel cats. They range between 2 to 15 lbs.

Try bacon, you don't need much, maybe 1/4 of a slice, and it won't come off the hook easily. Mike

Channel cats like food that smells, any kind of food that smells. We use small chunks of chicken soaked with garlic salt. In our lake the channels will regularly hit live shad and shiners.

I seem to do really well in the Delaware River for channel cats using herring for bait. Cut frozen herring like FISH steaks then cut that in half with a #2 hook.

If chicken liver doesn't work then there aren't any catfish around but it does come off the hook easy tie it on.
