RJS, since you seem to be from Texas, I'll bet you can remember back when we were youngsters and every where we went outdoors ticks and chiggers, or red bugs, would cover you up. Picking dewberries in the spring next to a rice cannel was the worst. Do you remember how bad the ticks could be for a dog that no one took care of?

Then came the fire ants. Word around the campfire is that the fore ants ate up the ticks and chiggers. I'll take the ants. It is easier to avoid them if you are looking. Go catch something!!!

volfman: Born here, moved around a lot, but always came back. I've lived in Houston longer than any place else, even where I grew up.

Your probably right. I think fire ants have changed a lot of things, some good and some bad. Besides chiggers and ticks, they've also wiped out regular red ant colonies. By doing that, it has also wiped out horn toad habitat and even affected baby quail when they are still in the nest, as well as all other ground nesting birds. When driving through the country, i regularly see fire ant mounds scattered about every 6 feet apart in pastures. Thanks for your kind words. Just Sayin...RJS

Make sure to spray your dock lines. This is the main way they get in your boat !!!!!

RJS, That's what I get for writing something before I think things through. I forgot about the quail and other wonderful things the ants have taken away from us. I especially miss the horn toads. I love dinosaurs.

I moved from Houston to New Braunfels about four years back. I have noticed that the ant hills in this part of the country aren't as common as they were a few years ago. I have no clue as to why. I do a bit of dozer, motor grader and farm tractor work for different folks, and the ants do seem to be going away. Even if they all go away, that probably won't bring back my horn toads. The quail, possibly. Go catch a fish!!!

sure dont miss the fire ants. those dang critters would gig a nest right next to the drive way and i'd go to work before sunup and not see it. them sumb tches would get half way up your leg before they started bitin and there I'd be on the shoulder of hwy 78 strippin off my pants.
another advantage of the tarp over the boat: the guys at the marinas would ever so often take a hose and spray to knock down the spiderwebs. once at anchor bay marina around the bend just north of you they were knockin down webs and they really soaked this guys bass boat. that marina isnt shelterer like yours, ccc, and a north wind came up with waves big enough to lap over his transom and sank it rite there in his boat slip...200horse motor on 18 ft pancake not just a lot o power but a lot o weight
aint bin ther dun that

The reason the spiders are there is because it's good hunting for them...if they are nice & fat they are doing you a favor. You mentioned webs...most web weavers are harmless except for the black widow & the Wyoming brown spider...brown with a dark brown hour glass like a black widow. The rest are jumpers or wolf spiders & again they are very beneficial...I'd find out what's attacking the spiders...they are just trying to make a living. Plus they help keep the two legged pests away looking for booty...

Need help or advise on how to control spiders in a covered slip. My slip at the marina on Lake Lavon in
Texas, is prone to infestation of spiders. Have to spend several minutes every visit just to knock down the spider webs.

First eliminate LUNCH--insects and other bugs. Demand CS is an excellent product (follow the label.). It is available from various sources on the web. Also, use glue boards/sticky traps for the spiders. There should be folding marks on the glue boards--prefold, then remove the sticky protectant(wax shield, etc.), then refold. Prefolding saves you from being stuck to the board.
