I would 100 percent get good at fishing from the bank first. I would call myself a pretty experienced fishermen, been seriously bass fishing for like two years, been fishing casually as long as I can remember. River fishing can be a pain in the butt. There are days where I’ll hit up my river and catch nothing on 10 different baits, but then head up to one of the ponds and catch tons of fish on the same lures.

Yes you need to take up knitting it’s much easier on your nerves s as and you can make some nice things for your 3 kids .

Local tackle shop or local guides are a good start for info. Good luck and stick with it. Not much better for the soul than connecting with the water. 👍

The problem you are havin is that you don't make SURE your line is tight before you start reelin it in. You do that by closing the bail and grabin the line and pull it tight with the hand you hold the rod with. Once the line is tight , Hold the line with that hand along the rod above the reel and start reelin in the line. Whenever the line is tight to your bait or lure, NOW you can reel your line in without it causin a mess or a loop. Once your line is tight to your lure you no longer haft to hold it tight to the rod with your rod hand. Does any of this make sense to you, can you follow what I've said? The problem with youtube, is that you get opinions.
The best thing to do, is identify those guys on the lake that are catching. pay attention to what they are doing on YOUR water. More fun than watching tv "experts"

Try worms, minnows, even hot dogs or beef sticks. To me that's your best bet to catch bass and smaller panfish. I'm like you. I can't catch anything with lures.

Try a drop shot with either a rubber worm or nightcrawler. And remember you're on a boat so you don't exactly need to cast a mile.

Maybe you have too much line on the reel. I bought one weeks back and the spool was full. Strip some off and make sure it not too loose reeling in. I changed mine over to braid and left 1/8 inch below spool level. Now I'm casting further than with the original line

I have to agree with you about using a spin caster. It's what we all started on mostly, and you can get a bigger one then the Zebco 33 for bass. And always use a snap swivel if you use spinnerbaits. I caught many a bass on spin casters years ago, and I had a larger one by Shakespeare than the Zebco 33.

Also I would have to say the easiest bass lure for a beginner is a tube jig. Google tube jigs end get a few of them and you will catch bass. There are crankbaits like rattle traps that are easy as well and lots of topwater Bates that are easy to use thought I would stay cheap and start with tube jigs for now.

Stick it out,get rid if that pre-spooled crap that it came with,put on some better line say 6-8lb & that should grant u more time to hook in to some bass
