Discouraged
I am pretty new to fishing besides going as a kid and not being interested. I mean I've been throwing a rod while I kayak for about 3 years. First year - nothing. Second year - I was catching enough to be happy and to feel I am moving forward. This year - nothing. I usually just fish a local river and throw rooster tails. I would love to catch bass but I have to have knowledge on lures or techniques which I have none at all. I spend the majority of the time fixing my rod because the line tangled up or some stupid thing when reeling in. I am getting really discourage because I will be out there with my friends who don't fish and just bought a rod and they catch more than I do. Can I get help on where to start or to learn because I feel I might just give up.

You should look on YouTube there’s tons of videos teaching you pretty much everything about fishing. I suggest learning how to read a contour map it’ll help you a lot

Great Utube bass resources I learned so much from all these guys!
Fish the moment really technical approach
Tactical basin these guys break it down really well one of them is a fisheries biologist
Flukemaster has everything including basic rid/reel selection, tackle techniques you Name it it’s provably one there. There is a beginners section where actually walks through a fisherman’s warehouse on a beginners shopping trip.
You might have to look up specific bass river fishing videos but the knowledge you can pick up off some of the lake fisherman carries over well. Lots of kayak fishing videos on u tube also.
Stick with it my man!

In todays day and age the best advice i can give you other than on the water practice is watching youtube. Literaly just watch videos of people fishing in similar conditions and do exactly what they do until something works. It will just click and hit you one day, and you'll take off from there. Put your head in the mind of a predatory fish. PM/chat me if you want more detail. If you tell me where youre fishing i can put you on some good baits to get started

Some people like them, but screw rooster tails. Go get a mepps in a normal looking color. Brown with a little red in a number 2 or 3 works good most places. Throw towards cover and work around it. Maybe your reeling too fast, maybe too slow. Assuming your using spinning tackle and your talking about line twist, do you have the right line for the reel? If so tie it off to something, walk it down to the spool, and reel yourself back in. Get it good and tight, that should help.

Are you using a bait caster rod? If you're really struggling with that consider downgrading to spinner , it's a lot easier.

I use standard prespooled spinning rods. Example of some mishaps:
I cast an as I reel in the line gets tangled around the motor reel.
I cast and it reels in fine but a "wing/loop" forms where the line is winded up in the spool.

Have you considered a spincaster? Those are super user-friendly and don't have the issues you described. Consider a zebco 33 reel and medium heavy rod.

Get some soft plastics and texas-rig them. Worm, swimbait, beaver - pretty much anything. Pull the bait before reeling to limit slack line, and you'll cut way down on the tangles.

Get a spinning rod, with a 20 lb braided line, and use a Texas Rig with 1/16 bullet weight and a 4” or 5” Zoom Finesse Worm
Learn to flip and pitch
Very important to always use sunglasses when bass fishing to avoid the glare in the water so you can see the fish easier

Practice using your gear fishing from a bank with nothing around to get stuck on.
You may want to look into the type of line you’re using and/or spool up some newer line. Also may want to look into using barrel or snap swivels.
Rubber worms are the best beginner bass bait and there’s tons of YouTube videos explaining how/when/where to use them.
Once your comfortable and got your confidence up, try again from the yak.
Good luck.

I've never spooled my own rod so I'm afraid I'll screw it up. I have always bought pre-spooled setups. This is probably why my reel messes up every 10 minutes. Sometimes it feels as if I fix my rod more than I cast.

Cheap stock monofilament line that comes on reels is poor at best.
Look up how to respool on youtube, or take your reel to a local bait and tackle shop and have them spool up some new line for ya.
