It's called the GPS store correct? Is it online or only in North Carolina? As much as I would love to visit there, can't afford the trip.

It's on line. They have lots of different items. I've bought a number of items from them. I look to see if they have what I'm looking for then call them.

Hand-held vs. hard-wired: keep in mind that HWed units are 25 watts, and HH's 5 or less. In addition, HW antennas are mounted high compared to a person standing on the deck. Thus, the HWed units have a lot more range. As pointed out above, in case of a loss of power, an additional HH will come in handy.

Also VHF range is pretty much "Line of sight " so the higher the antenna the longer the range. You can get an adapter to connect your hand held to your big antenna, thereby increasing your range.

Correct, but still 5 watts or less, and less battery capacity. People often find they really need the VHF late in the day, but have sometimes been jabbering and have run the battery down. Safety is not the place to skimp.

No doubt, but if you have to use your backup, handheld You will send a signal much farther with the 8ft antenna. A 5 dollar adapter can save your life!

Get a good mounted radio and a good antenna. You should get the best if your going out in the ocean you should get the most range you can.

And when your battery dies and your motor won't start.........that's when your back up will save you!

Not that many smaller saltwater boats do. Many. can't afford a "saltwater " trolling motor.

It would be worth a small deep cycle battery stowed just for emergencies
