Thanks to Dehy, my fish finder problem has been solved. Once again thank you for your help. Now I need info on VHF radios. I don't know if handheld or mounted is best. I will be going out in the central coast Pacific but not more than 25 miles probably. My boat is a 28' Victoria Bayliner.

Hey Rocky, welcome. Glad you got your FF problem fixed. Could you put your location in your profile? Would like to know where you're from. Glad to have you on board with us. Tight lines.
Mounted has better range, ie bigger antenna. But a handheld for an Emergency is not a bad Idea. If the Battery dies on the boat, the Handheld will still work. Seeing as how my "Luck" is so good i would advise both.
Just something to think of.

Are you talking a marine band radio? My marine band radio and it supposed to be a good one, it cost me a few bucks, but it doesn't go through islands. My buddy can be just on the other side of an island and we can't talk to each other. He has the same kind that I do. It has saved my a$$ once because he had to pull me in, but if I couldn't see him I couldn't talk to him. Maybe that's the way they work, IDK. It could be different in the ocean.
I think I just did. I am very computer/ digital dumb though. I am in central CA. Home base is Bakersfield but I normally go out of Port San Luis.
Go with permanent mount. A long time back I had a 35 Owens and cruised to west coast to canada and Alaska. Found a hand held did not have the power or range needed in an emergency. A good permanent mount had the range and power to talk to anyone, anywhere.
Good advice. Now if my budget allows for both.

I have a hand held, but I'm only fishing in the bay or close to shore when in the ocean.
Check out The GPS store on line. Very good prices.
Plus bonus you get to hear the women with the great South Carolina accent.
Hi Rocky I grew up in Bakersfield now in Oregon lots of relatives there
Hey Justoldjim. When were you here in Bako. What high school and year of graduation?

actually in Oildale 1950 to 1971 North High 1954
Small world. My wife was a Star. My grandson played football there all 4 years and graduates this year. But they aren't able to walk and receive diplomas. Both granddaughters went to Standard. I went to West. First graduating class in 67.
When I had my boat everything critical was duplicated except the power.
