This is a Mayan cichlid. Fun to catch. Release so someone else can catch him too or leave him on the bank for the birds? Any opinions? I opted to put him back.

Looks like a cross between a sheepshead & a redfish spots only...

I saw an episode of triple D on the food network and a guy was serving deep fried carp and people were coming from all over to enjoy his fare. I've actually never had it, but I've mostly heard that it's nasty. I know the Russians around here go out and target it and if you catch a carp and you don't want it they'll gladly take it off your hands.

I fish for carp here, there are many Russians along with other nationalities that fish for them too..Exclusively.

I have offered my catch to these folks, some barely speak English,I do recognize the words "Thank you "

they repeat over and over, with a grin.

Do not throw dem back - Toss em da bank for de critters to eat. Wud love to know who started dem in da rivers, lakes and streams - may have been a good idea then, but not now. Interesting how when you play with nature, she always wins and kicks you in the behind!

I have been told if prepared properly, starting by flushing them out in a tank of fresh water to get rid of the mud vein, they are quite tasty.I catch enough of them for the FIGHT,now I just may eat one,6 to 8 pound are the best I've been told. We'll see.

I've heard of a "mud vein" in shrimp and crawdads, but not in fish. Enlighten me, please!

They take on a 'mud taste' from the environment they are in,fresh clear water holding flushes that mud taste out,I've always heard it called a "mud vein". Makes sense to me.

I'd never eaten carp and nether had my brother-in-law or his dad, Ted. When they caught them they would take them to town and give them away and the folks were well pleased. We were fishing were fishing below then Bluestone dam, on the New River, and above the Greenbrier River, when I caught two carp. The small one was 15# and the largest was 27#, and ted had caught a 5# Flathead cat. Ted said it was a shame we didn't have enough for a fry. I said we should try a carp, and he let me know he didn't like that idea. I talked him in getting one of the people he gave the fish to, to show him how to prepare it and give him a recipe.

We had a fry that evening, Ted, My brother-in-law, and I were the only ones that knew what the mystery fish was but when everyone was full there was Flathead left, and no carp. After that Ted said the only way he was giving carp away unless he had more than he could use.

Tilapia, now there is a fish, in my opinion, that is only fit for fertilizer and animal feed. My neighbor had a bunch of them things in his pond, that a cold spell killed them all. he skimmed them off the top and made good use of them. He fed the yard buzzards (chickens) and wildlife. The fishing in his pond, several years later, is much better. We catch only native fish in his pond now

Suggestion...If it is not native, get rid of it. Kind of like the python some bygone two legged, irresponsible creatures decided to introduce to Florida. I don't live in Florida but, have learned how the python has upset the Eco system in that state. Another suggestion: Keep Our Out of Doors natural, respect America's natural habitat or stay at home with your six pack and color TV.

Concur if it's not native get rid of it...had a python up here crossing the street a few years ago...my daughter comes running into the house telling me there is a python crossing the street...so I made a few smart a$$ remarks until my wife kicks me in the butt...it was an 7-8 foot python...the guys at the dump must have been shocked to see a dead python in the garbage...

We have a wild game dinner at the gun club in Parma, IDAHO. A Chinese member prepares a carp dish for that dinner. It is ok but not gourmet in my book. Same for smoked carp I have tried. A surprise at that dinner is bobcat or mountain lion finger steaks . They are very much like pork. I made my living as a food scientist.
