This is a Mayan cichlid. Fun to catch. Release so someone else can catch him too or leave him on the bank for the birds? Any opinions? I opted to put him back.

Some places it's illegal to put invasive species back. Maybe you should check what the regs say where you fish. IDK, are they edible?

There are no rules in FL just a suggestion not to leave them on the bank. No idea if they’re edible or not. Anyone else know?

Ask an osprey if they're edible. Or a crab.

Yes they are and very tasty . I have eaten many . They fight better than most bass . If your not going to eat don't waste it .There are a lot of people here in FL that would enjoy the fish. The Snakehead fish are also a good fish. I have eaten a few. Don't waste it put it back . The Snakehead meat is as white as it comes .

Outside of Menhaden (Bunker) and similar dark fleshed oily species, are there any fish that are not edible? So bad tasting that you couldn’t eat them for survival?

Some puffer fish are toxic if you don't know what you're doing cleaning them they can kill you. But I hear they're delicious, if you do know how to do it. When I was in the Marshall Islands the word was not to eat barracuda because they preyed on fish that ate other fish that ate coral. But again, if you cleaned the toxic parts out they were delicious. The first sashimi I ever ate was barracuda from those waters.

Used to catch Puffer in Long Is. Sound when I was a kid. Good eating and not poisonous. Had some of the poisonous kind in Japan. They must have been cleaned right since I’m still here

The poison from most fish like that is ciguatera, it builds up in predators which eat fish around the coral reefs. There's warnings from around the great barrier reef that barracuda, chinaman fish, red bass and several others carry this.

If it's an invasive species do not put it back...if anything bury it & it will become fertilizer...all it takes is one fertile female to propagate a species...lion fish down here seem to be on the decline thanks to all the efforts to remove them...
As I've stated before...back in a previous life loved chicken of the sea or blowfish up in Long Island...

That's not the case here. There are a lot of things you COULD eat for survival. That doesn't mean they taste good and you should eat them if you don't have to. Personally, I would put CARP and the like in that category. IDK to many people that would eat carp or buffalo if they had other fish they could eat instead.

I saw an episode of triple D on the food network and a guy was serving deep fried carp and people were coming from all over to enjoy his fare. I've actually never had it, but I've mostly heard that it's nasty. I know the Russians around here go out and target it and if you catch a carp and you don't want it they'll gladly take it off your hands.
