Have been talking with several different people fishing all in boats...they say they have been having a great time catching spanish. I've been watching the birds hitting areas were fish are churning up the water. I've tried from a dock no luck...

Out of all the setups I use regularly, only one is a casting rod. The rest are all spinning rods. All the pros and most of the people I see online have the exact opposite arsenal. I like spinning reels because they don't backlash, I can lend them to people who don't have baitcaster experience, I can throw lighter weights easier, and I can get a good spinning reel for less than what I pay for an equally good baitcaster. (With that said I have a Daiwa Fuego CT on a 13 Fate Black rod and I love using it as much as my spinning setups, I just don't have an entire lineup to match)

I don't struggle to catch fish (at least not that I know of) or have fun fishing using spinning gear, but I can't help feel like I'm doing it wrong. Is only using spinning gear wrong? Do baitcasters make that big of a difference?

How many of you people out there can say that they have fished with a Mooching Rod and Reel?

That’s fun
Especially with a big salmon on the run

Looks like that would work great for those big mama reds down here...

No you are not doing it wrong. Even the Big Boy's use spinning gear. Use what work's for you and you are happy with. I use both and I love my spinning gear because it lets me get bait to places that I can not get with bait casters. Just have fun and catch a lot of fish.

OK, growing up I learned on bait casters, Penn Reels. I used my saved up money for a Zebco 33 and quit using the Penn reels as I was fishing more from shore, not trolling. Later I bought an "Open Face" reel. Didn't worry about Bait casters until I got to the East Coast and pier fishing. Only because of the drag and heavier line. When I bought a Diawa 7700A with a 30 LB drag, I stopped using the Penn reels. For Fresh water I bought Garcia Mitchel reels. The 406 I bought was great as one of the first 5:1 reels.
It comes down to what you can use best and what works for you. I still like Open Face spinning reels, now that Bait Runners are out I like them very much if not lure casting. As my fishing right now is Salt/Brine water I hope for bigger fish. Highest drag I have right now is 41 LB drag on a Bait Runner.
Finally do what works for you and enjoy yourself. The "Pros" are being paid to market the higher dollar reels and rods IMO. My problem is spending $100 or more on a Reel and then $100 or more on a Rod.
I still have rods I bought back in the 70's and still use.

Those closed faced Zebcos never really held up too well with my kids...had one daughter that could dissect a ball bearing put it back together & come up with spare parts...those el cheapo Daiwa sweepfire seem to hold up in fact still have them & use them...converted them all to manual...was just out with one & lost a lure...

When I was a kid we only had spinning rods you would rarely see a bait caster, then they improved and took off, spinning can do anything bait caster can

I started fishing when I was a little boy using Cain poles then switched to Zebco 33’s then switched to spinning rod and reels when I was a teenager. I wS 32 when I bought my first baitcaster only because a buddy of mine was using one. It was a abu Garcia ultra mag xl plus on a browning boron pistol grip rod, got it in 82. Yup, lots of bird’s nests but after spending $150 on that setup I finally figured it out. I still use that rod and reel today. I use it to cast plastic worms with no weight and do so without backlash it. It doesn’t go as far but still catch fish with it. I have 7 baitcasting setups and 3 spinning rods. I love using all of them.

Like everyone here has said, use what you are comfortable with. There is no right or wrong way to fish. As long as you are having fun, who cares what you’re using. Just get out there and have fun and catch you a big one and keep your lines tight!

Oh my...I thought the fish cared about what type of rod & reel some yahoo trying to catch them with counts...
you think like I do...it's not even catching fish that counts it being out there & away from idiots...which in most cases the fish have more brains then they do...

My first spinning reel is a Pfluger free speed 100. I still have it . 64 years. Every now and then i use it. Keep spinning. I find it the best way of fishing.

When I lived in SW Louisiana, most of the Great Fishermen I Knew Used Baitcasting Reels (Garcia’s , Etc.) Because of the Conditions and the Fight of Drum, Redfish, Etc.. here in Texas a lot of Bass Fishermen I know use Mostly
Bait Casting Reels. But, I Have Noticed
A Lot of People are Using Zebcos, Etc. Because they are Dependable & Do the Job WITHOUT BACKLASHING !!

That's why all my spinning reels are converted to manual...even the cheap ones...cut the bail & crazy glue the all the movable parts.
