I challenge the statement, "Everyone started with a Zebco". I didn't and never saw one until perhaps when I got to college. Neither did there appear any other spinning rigs. During WW II, there wasn't any new equipment being manufactured for the public, everything went to the war effort. All tackle was for emergency kits for downed pilots and crews. If there were spinning rigs before 1946, they certainly hadn't made it to my neck of the woods. Just sayin...RJS
Godspeed RJS...should be everyone started with cane pole...

I agree all kids should learn the fundamentals of hook, line, sinker & bait with pole before advancing to
rod/reel!!!!!!!! too many get frustrated with the fancy crap!!
Little turkeys just love catching something...next trick is getting them to take it off the hook safely...

Out of all the setups I use regularly, only one is a casting rod. The rest are all spinning rods. All the pros and most of the people I see online have the exact opposite arsenal. I like spinning reels because they don't backlash, I can lend them to people who don't have baitcaster experience, I can throw lighter weights easier, and I can get a good spinning reel for less than what I pay for an equally good baitcaster. (With that said I have a Daiwa Fuego CT on a 13 Fate Black rod and I love using it as much as my spinning setups, I just don't have an entire lineup to match)
I don't struggle to catch fish (at least not that I know of) or have fun fishing using spinning gear, but I can't help feel like I'm doing it wrong. Is only using spinning gear wrong? Do baitcasters make that big of a difference?

Never used a bait caster except in Gym Class at Penn State university. Had to cast a dummy lure into a 5 gallon bait bucket at 10 yards.....Got the only "A" (4.0) that I ever got in college by casting that dumb thing. Been actually fishing since I was 6 years old...now 78. Caught thousands of fish during those years..The majority of the fish were caught on spinning tackle....just caught 2 more bass today....on a fly rod.
RJS: I’ve seen that doe as well, and got so interested I tried it several times; not as easy as it looks, but even a Gringo can get the hang of it ‘a little’. I showed my grandson using a Bud can found on the bank and a Rooster-tail. He was duly impressed.
All I use now are spinning reels. I like Daiwa Black and Gold
A bait casting reel is a tool that you you want too have in your box but, you need to be proficient at using it. Otherwise you will go to what you have confidence in and what has worked for you in the past. Once you get it, bass fishing anyway you will throw it often and enjoy not having to flip the bail. I use both on my quest for Bucketmouths. .....OVER......
Ya’ll got it covered very well. Good job. Hey, Dadeaux: i heard the Spanish are hitting off P’cola.
The only casting gear I use is spincasting. I bought a baitcasting set up a few years ago but just couldn't get the hang of it. I was spending more time picking out bird's nests than I was fishing which just pissed me off. I gave it to a friend before it ended up at the bottom of the lake.
I thought folks used baitcasters because there's no line twist along with the other things mentioned...

I have about 25 Spinning rigs and only two bait casters
I use my bait caster for Musky
Everything else I use spinning gear
A matter of personal preference and practicality I guess
