It's hard to beat a big salmon on a fly rod in a fast moving stream. About the only thing you can do is run with him.
120 lb. yellow fin tuna in Poorman's canyon while nigh-time chunking with 80# standup gear, kicked our butts!
38LB Flathead Catfish caught in a canal against the current. Only took about 15 minutes but it felt like a Whale on the other end of the line.
Even though this was over 40 years ago, I'll always remember this 28 inch 10 pound Lake Trout.
He took my 6" chub and the fun began. So far, only fish I ever had dance on his tail for me! First and after the dance, he plunged to depths unknown on Kipawa Lake in northern Quebec. Fought until he thankfully tired before I did. He was delicious too. Had to change my totally stretched to beyond ever casting 8 lb test monofilament line. God, I miss those times!
Mine was a 140 lb. TARPON on a 12wt fly road. 3 hours and 30 min
Don't know what it was, but it was brute power. I was fishing on a party boat at night off the Coronados in Mexican waters. Using a Penn Senator 4/0 reel spooled with 60# line to the top of the spool. Something grabbed my live mackerel near the bottom in about 85 feet of water and just moved off, staying deep. It didn't scream out like a tuna but just keep going steadily at a medium speed. It got to about my last 50 yards of line so I cranked down the drag. The 4/0 just exploded. There were only three of us up and fishing, but we all said, "what was that." Anybody have any ideas? This was in the late 1970"s.
May 2017 - Fishing for Halibut in Alaska - I hooked a 59 inch, 95 pounder!! I fought for about 10 minutes (seemed like 10 hours) and I ran out of gas, I just could not turn the reel anymore, so I gave the rod to my Grandson and it took him another 10 minutes to get him to the boat! Then the Captain pulled out his Glock 45 and shot him!!
Roughly 40 years ago was on a 4-man charter out of Montauk, NY. Hooked what turned out to be an 80+ lb Bluefin tuna. Fought him for little over 1/2 hour on rod and reel with no gimbal. At the time I was in great shape, standing 6 ft 10" but when it was all over I felt like I needed an iron lung. Immediately developed an extreme respect for the species. Had to take a long break before putting my line back in the water. Will never forget it.
Shot who? The halibut or your grandson? (LOL).....God forbid!
Striped marlin 180lb on 25lb tackle.
Worm me down as much as that fish
without a doubt it was a 275lb halibut I caught in Cook's inlet in Alaska
