If using real bait such as liver or cut fish, use garlic power on the bait, seems to work well for me.

I used to use bait shrimp to catch catfish in the river and had a problem with the turtles getting hooked. Of course, I cut the line, but dreaded catching the turtles. Has anyone ever tried to de-hook a turtle?

Do like my friends so in a nearby place I frequent, shoot them either with a 22 rifle or a pellet gun. Works well for us and we don't have to worry about them lol. Just saying

Shrimp doesn't work for me. I use a slice of mullet for catfish. Works great. Stays well on the hook too...Something even better if you can get it,,,Mullet roe. I used to buy mullet that had the roe in them and used it first. Caught the largest cats on the roe. As for the turtles, I'm considering practicing with my pellet gun. I said CONSIDERING.

Its good, look at the reviews on amazon, thats where I found it. But make sure you know there’s alot of catfish where your fishing too before you say something doesn’t work or give up on it (i dont mean that in a rude way). This was my first time trying it, only bought it cause I couldn’t find chicken liver and it’s alot less messy and easier to deal with too so thats a plus. This pond i’ve been fishing at is stocked with catfish and bass too so I know they’re there, definitely would’ve caught more if turtles didn’t keep stealing my bait.

Take a couple or three slices of bacon. Use a third of a slice per cast and be sure to have a stringer. Mike

There are 7 different types of meat in a snapping turtle. Try keeping one and eating it just be careful, they can reach back bite you finger or half a hand off. If you're going to carry them, use the tail and keep it away from your leg. Mike

Turtles love shrimp. That being said, I love turtle meat. That includes all the different varieties of meat in a snapping turtle. I have just eaten them from a private pond in Iowa. Check your local laws to see if they are legal in your location. I caught several giant ones on shrimp just stopping at water access spots in Florida as I toured in a rental car and stayed at motels. I had no way to fix them and was uncertain about the laws anyway. There must be cleaning instructions on u-tube. I learned to clean and cook them from a relative.

Take a shotgun and tape a camera to the gun barrel and take a few good close up pictures.

I suspect what y'all are eating are the big soft shell turtles that are loaded with meat and very good to eat. Something you can try is soap; cat fishermen here put out trot lines and bait them with chunks of soap and I don't think they are ever bothered with turtles.

Wrong Judge. I am talking about snapping turtles. Beak, long claws and armored segmented shell. It is far more respectful and a better way to make friends if you just remain quiet when not sure. You might not want to speculate when you are just guessing so that you can post something. Please do not take this personal. It is a common trait on this otherwise great site. Just something to think about.

I said I "Suspect" and the turtle you are talking about is called a Logger Head turtle that is described as you said was a snapping turtle. I have two lakes of my own and I have all species of turtles. The soft shell is a flat turtle with a long neck, soft smooth shell and is almost round in shape. They are easy to clean and have a lot of clean looking meat that some say taste like chicken when fried. I have never known anyone to kill or clean a logger head; snapping turtle essentially because it would be so difficult to cut out of the very thick and tough shell. I don't post just to have something to say. If I did I would spend a few moments calling you out for being disrespectful.

The Snapping Turtle that you described with the ridges and different shapes is the Alligator Snapping Turtles and he is the really big and ugliest of snapping turtles. Our Colloquial name for those Is Logger Head. There are a few different species of snapping turtles and an old legend is that if one bites you he won't turn loose until it Thunders. They do not attack but bite when frightened or agitated.
